HOME BUILOING INCAPITAL SHOWS GREAT INCREASE Total in First Week of March Only Slightly Under Entire Month in 1934. PERMITS FOR PRIVATE CONSTRUCTION $283,263 Drive of Better Housing Cam- paign Has Had Effect on Week's Activity in Modernization. Residential construction in Wash- {ngton during the first week of March was only slightly short of the total for the entire month in 1934, and the valuation of all types of private con- struction during the week estimated by building permits reached the im- pressive total of $283,263. Permits for erection of 35 residen- tial structures, 30 of which are one-| family dwellings, were issued by the office of Building Inspector John W. Oehmann during the last week. In the entire month of March last year 42 residential structures were in- cluded in the list of permits. Another striking statistical fact in- dicative of the awakening of the con- struction industry locally is that the valuation of all types of building in the last week was about 60 per cent as great as the total for last March— $455,645. Campaign Effects Felt. The intensive drive of the Wash- {ngton Better Housing Csm?a.\gn also had its effect in the week’s activity es a large number of property mod- ernization permits were included. In all there were 8¢ permits issued dur- ing the week, the largest number this ear. i ! A permit to build 10 »twu-slory brick houses at a total estimated cost of 50,000, which was obtained by the Calvert Realty Co., 1625 K street, was the largest of the week. The homes are to be located in the 3800 block of Calvert street. R. O. Scholz was amed architect. nclarence W. Gosnell, Inc, 1414 Monroe street, was granted & permit to construct five 2-story brick flats in the 300 block of Jefferson street and 5400 block of Third street. The total cost was estimated at $35,000. Dana B. Johannes was listed as de- signer.
