A wave of counterfeiting sweeping the country has led W. H. Moran, chief of the secret service, to declare “conditions are about as bad as we have ever known them to be.” He told members of the House con- sidering the Treasury appropriations bill that the greatest rise in counter- feiting has been in the manufacture of coins. His testimony was dis- closed in a report made public yes- terday. “Recently,” he said, “we have been troubled with coins made of all sil- ¥ |ver—some of it low grade, but then, TMEN! An excellent reproduction of the nickel is giving particular trouble in New York. As for currency, Moran asserted: “I am ashamed to say that the people of this country will take any- thing that remotely resembles a piece of paper currency Work on Bills Bad. “We have counterfeits of $5 and $10 notes coming into us—and I have seen advertising dodgers that displayed better workmanship.” His statements came as the Sen- ate and House Judiciary Committees considered four bills submitted by At- torney General Homer Cummings to speed up criminal prosecutions. The measures require defandants to file notice if they intend to submit an alibi, enable judges to comment if a defendant refuses to testify on the ground of self-incrimination, abolish appeals from orders dismiss- ing an application for a habeas cor- pus writ and give the Government the right to take depositions from wit- nesses before trials. 'ROBERTS’ TRANSIT PLAN SUPPORTED Benefits for Takoma Park Citi- zens Win Favor in Section. People’s Counsel William A. Roberts is receiving support from various quar- ters for his plan to install express car servic. on upper Eleventh street and to reroute traffic to provide citizens of the Takoma Park sections with a more direct route to downtown por- tions of the city. As supplemental to his rerouting plan, the Columbia Heights Business Men’s Association notified Roberts yes- terday that a proposal would be made at the next meeting of the association for a cross-town bus from Wisconsin avenue northwest to approximately Rhode Island avenue northeast. There appears to be no doubt that this project will receive the approval of the association, Secretary H. C. Phillips | reported. The Citizens’ Forum of Columbia Heights strongly backed the rerouting plan. In any such rerouting, it in- formed Roberts by letter, direct street car service should be continued from the Takoma Park section by way of Fourteenth street to downtown sec- tions. Additional tracks from Georgia avenue and Fourteenth street should be constructed, it was suggested, to connect with Eleventh street for a more complete service on that car line. In the meantime, the use of Eleventh street should be increased during the rush traffic hours, it was proposed.
