Backers of the Patman bill to pay the $2,100,000,000 soldiers’ bonus with new Treasury notes surged forward today with a threat to force a vote in the House if administration leaders seek delay. In an informal caucus that threw into sharp relief a division of opinion among bonus advocates as to just what bill should be pressed, 125 House Democrats went on record last night for quick passage of the measure in- troduced by Representative Patman, Democrat, of Texas. The commander of the American Legion has come out strongly for the Vinson bill, which leaves to the Treas- ury the method of financing the bonus. Assailing this measure last aight, Representative Gassaway, Demo- crat, of Oklahoma, said it was a “bankers’ bonus bill.” He contended the bankers would “get a bonus in interest” through the issuing of Treasury notes. Bill Held Inflationary. Foes of the Patman bill, on the other hand, object to it as inflationary. At last night's caucus, which was called by Patman, Representative Connery, Democrat, of Massachusetts, Patman said “Speaker Byrns promised the Demo- | cratic caucus an early vote on the £ | faction over the action of the Demo- soothing anteed res s or other | ... get a_tube foday for g A\t Pe eoples Drug § _Bood druggisis | mittee, which is handling the bonus S TOC! or_the e year | other the ihe "The k ‘pm. | T | ol Gl =4 v and second-hand grilles. Bonus advocates expressed dissatis- cratic leaders who, in responding to pressure from the White House, de- cided that the social security and work relief programs would be given prece- dence over the bonus. The House Ways and Means Com- bills, decided to give right of way to the security measures. Declaring the Vm:un bill has “mud- died the waters,” Patman said that “if | the bonus legislation fails in this Congress the American Legion will be | responsible.” Last night's caucus authorized Pat- man, who was elected chairman, to appoint a Steering Committee to wage | the fight for passage of his bill. Pat- man said he would appo\m it today. BlLL LIFTS AGE BAN ON SERVICE TESTS Senator Moore Introduces Mea- sure to Prevent Disqualifying of Applicants. McSwain's committee decided to | seek an extension of its study of | War Department expenditures and ordered public hearings beginning Tuesday en a universal draft bill freezing prices in the event of war. Senate Votes $50,000. At the same time, the Senate | unanimously voted another $50,000.| for its special committee which is investigating munitions. | McSwain said the first witness on | the draft bill would be the three men named by President Roosevelt to EURZSAMMTTITE formulate means of taking the profits out of war—Bernard M. Chairman Nye of the Senate Mu- nitions Committee said after appro- priation of the $50,000 that his group would resume its sessions Monday, its initial inquiry being directed at as- sertions that there is collusion among shipbuilders, The hearings, he said, would be held almost daily for an indefinite period. One accusation to be studied will be that the cost of cruisers rose from $8,000,000 in 1932 to $16,000,000 in 1934. The committee will inquire into records of the New York, New- | port News and Bethlehem Shipbuild- ing companies, FARM FAILURES FEWER Bankruptcies 20 Per Cent Less During Last Fiscal Year.
