NEW YORK, January 5.—Despite #ome profit taking in recently aggres- sive issues, the bond market main- tained a steady to firm tone in today’s abbreviated session. Further consideration of the Presi- dent's message to Congress did not make for pessimism in the financial sector but, on the whole, tended to hearten holders of prime investment | loans who have, at times, been some- what nervous over inflationary trends. Trading was a little more active than that of last Saturday. Transfers totaled $7,721,000, par value, against $6,623,000 at the previous week end. The Associated Press averages for most domestic corporation groups were slightly higher. Bonds that advanced fractions to & point or more included American & Foreign Power 5s at 591:, Baltimore & Ohio first 4s at 1023, Colon Oil 6s at 43'2, Consolidated Gas 4'2s at 100, Delaware & Hudson refunding 4s at 943,, Great Northern Ts at 941: terboro Rapid Transit 6s at 621.. ternational Hydro-Electric 6s at 53, Manhattan Railway 4s at 59, Mon- tana Power refunding 5s at 96'z, Nickel Plate 6s at 691., Portland Gen- eral Electric 4!2s at 51%, Postal Tele- graph 5s at 46%, Southern Pacific 41,5 at 68, Southern Railway 4s at United Drug 5s at 907 and Wabash first 5s at 96. Among scattered losers of around a point or so were bonds of Warner Bros., Louisville & Arkansas, Illinois Central, Baldwin Locomotive and Al- leghany Corp. U. S. Government securities were quiet and slightly lower. In the for- | eign section the Brazilians got back 1 to 2 points of their previous losses. Antwerp City 5s spurted 271 points to | 126, Batavian 4'.s were up 4!4 at 114, and obligations of Germany improved. SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. | Bid 1003, 100t 1062 | r Cons. Of v 0 Corp. Wabash Rwy. 'FOREIGN EXCHANGES REMAIN NARROW Dollar Eases Trifle at London, but Pound Holds Steady at New York. By the Associated Press. Leading foreign currencies showed little change in terms of the dollar in yesterday's quiet exchange markets. In London the dollar slipped a trifle in terms of sterling, closing at 4.921%, while in New York the British unit held unchanged at $4.9215. In Paris the dollar was steady at an equivalent of 6.624 cents to the franc, and in later dealings in New York the French currency depreciated 15 of a cent to 6.625; cents. Other gold currencies, including the Dutch guilder and Swiss franc, were quiet and showed no important changes. FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW YORK. January 5 (P.—Federal Bank bo Bid. Asked.
