UCTIONS D. C, MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1934. —By EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS REAL ESTATE TARZAN AND THE LION MAN. DAILY SHORT STORY-: DEATH COQUETTE Chris Awoke From a Nap and Saw a Girl's Face Smiling Through' the Moving Car’s Window. BY WILLIAM G. BOGABT. ‘was gone. I mean, her face was gone!” “Listen,” I asks, “let’s get thi straight. [ “You mean you saw her reflection in the window. She must have been sitting near you on the same side of the car. Ain’t that right?” “No,” Chris says slowly. “She—that is, no one was in the car with me. ‘When her face dis- appeared I looked around me and and no one was Y U KNOW, I wouldn’t have believed it, only Chris was sober that morn- ing when he come into the lunch car about 4 o'clock. Sure, he could tell a good yarne— what newspaper can’t? —but, as I'm saying, Chris wasn't drunk. He'd finished up about 3 o'clock and caught the 3:10 train out of South Station. My diner is near Neponset, about 10 minutes’ ride after Soon Marcus came running back. “The girls are not there! They've gone!” he cried in despair. By now every one was astir. A thorough search of the camp revealed no sign of Naomi Madison or The director’s inspection of the camp confirmed Marcus’ alarm. “We'll just have to get along with- out them,” he shrugged. “But that doesn’t mean we can't eat. Wake up the girls, Mr. Marcus, and Gordon Z. Marcus was the first to be up. He looked quickly about him. The camp seemed deserted. The fires had died to smouldering embers. No sentry stood guard. He hurried to Orman’s tent. “Mr. Exhausted by the physical and nervous strains of the 4ay, the Americans slept deeply through the long night. Nor were they disturbed by the unusual activities of the Arabs, who were supposed to be on guard; for the swart sons of the desert moved silently in execution of their sinister plans. Well, as I was saying, Chris comes in and sits down and just stares along the counter for several minutes. His face was real pale and he kept staring at nothing. After a while he seems to remember where he is and he says to me kind of sudden: “Say, Mike, you got a drink?” Then I stared at him. Usually he was the one to pass around the bottle. ‘Well, there’s nobody in the place just then, so I reach under the coun- ter and slide the bottle of blended stuff across to him. He pours out nearly half a water glass full and gulps it down. “It's lousy, Mike,” he says. I don’t argue with him, but take a snorter myself. I can’t figure out what's troublin’ Chris. “Say, Chris,” I says finally, “what in hell's the matter with you? Seen a ghost?” He almost jumps out of his seat at that. Then he remembers who's talk- ing to him. “Mike,” he says, “I saw a beautiful{ girl tonight on the subway “Well, what about it?” I had to laugh at that one. “You've seen lots of nifties.” “Wait!” he says. that kind of a dame. way like one of those girls they keep m‘&}en in gardens down in old Mex- ico. She was dark and her skin was like satin and her hair was jet black and—" “Sure, I guess I know what you mean,” I says. “But what’s that to do with—' “Listen!” he comes back at me, “this one was different. I saw her in the sybway, see. I've never known a girl like that, But—she wasn’t there, Mike!” ' “Now, wait a minute,” I says, “You say you saw—" Chris holds up his hand. “Look.” he explains. “It was like this: I got on the train, see. There wasn't any- body else in the car with me. Well, “I don’t mean I mean this one you know how the swaying of the | cars makes you drowsy as the train roars along under the ground, Mike? I guess I dozed off for a few seconds. And when I opened my eyes there she was!” “Where?” “Her face was in the window across the aisle from me. She kept smiling at me and she was beaytiful and—" “What?” I asks, as his voice dies out. “When she smiled I smiled, too, and guess what she did, Mike?” “Well, her lips moved and she said one word. It was very plain, Mike. She said Good-by! That's said Mike. Just—Good-by! Then she all she | 1 SLIDE THE BOTTLE ACROSS TO HIM. there. It was just in the window, I tell you.” I poured another drink and tossed it off in a hurry. I didn’t know what to think. Just then half a dozen husky transport truck drivers come in and I'm kept busy for a while. Those guys are always hungry. By the time I'm through I see that Chris is gone and taken the bottle with him. There wasn't much left, anyway. I didn’t think much more about what he'd told me until the next day. A city dick from headquarters told me what happened to Chris the next morning. It seems Chris got a call from headquarters and the inspector wanted him down there right away. “We've got an automobile-accident victim and we want to see if it's any one you know.” This dick says the inspector asked Chris on the way to the hospital. It seems this party drove down & blind, dark street near South Station and before the car could be stopped it went off a dock at the end of the street and went into the harbor. A watchman or somebody saw it and fished this person out of the water. They take Chris up to a small white room and point to a figure lying there in a white bed. It was a girl, and she was real still, and she had black hair and her face was a funny white color. “Know her?” the inspector asked Chris. This copper says Chris didn't an- swer. But he seemed to be shaking inside of him and staring at the girl. You see, it was the same girl he'd seen in the subway window. I mean, it was the same face. Chris tried to say “yes” but he couldn’t get the words out, and then the inspector said: “I thought maybe you'd know her. She’s dead!” Chris stared a long time and after & while he said: “No, sir, I don't know who it is. I never saw her before. No, I don’t know who it is.” Then he went out of the little room, walking real slow. The ine spector didn’t know what to think. Chris never talks about that night any more. You know, there's a funny thing, though. The place where that car went off the end of the dock into the harbor is right over the subway. I mean, the sub- way is underneath there some place. It goes right under the water in a tunnel 'way down beneath the hare bor, (Copyright 1034) Tomorrow: “Demure Siren,” by Louise Bellows, is a humorous ac- count of a young secretary who dreaded being the other -woman in a love triangle.
