B—6 *¥# CLEARINGS RISE §120.230,%%6 HERE) Report for 1934 Reflects Marked Upturn Here Dur- ing Past Year. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Bank clearings in the National Cap- ital scored a substantial gain of more than $120,000,000 in 1934, compared with 1933. The final figures reported this noon by the Washington Clearing House Association, Charles E: Bright, man- ager, showed total clearings 1or the 12 months amounting to $738,690,669.47, in comparison with a total of $618,- 459,712.70 in the like period last year, or an increase of exactly $120,230, 956.77. December clearings, also reported today, presented a total of $70,339,- 94390, as compared with the much smaller figure of $57,282,201.40 in De- cember, 1933, thus making an excellent gain of $13,057,742.50. As a business barometer the $120,- 000,000 improvement over last year shows the real progress attained here during the past 12 months. The De- cember gain clearly reflects the great upswing in retail trade noted during the holiday season, when so many store managers reported the best business in the past five years. Bankers pointed out today that De- cember business was probably even better than the total in canceled checks pictured. The new uniform bank service changes have caused a reduction in the total number of checks drawn on the banks here. This resulted in the use of more cash in Christmas shopping than was the case a year ago. How much dif- ference cannot be stated. Clearings reported by the Washing- ton Clear House Association for the full year 1934 compare as follows with the corresponding months in 1933. 1934. 1933. ..$55,737,297 $72,567,289 49,091,824 61,012.252 62,204,874 32,644,937 61.297.334 38,960,517 61.662.074 .40,453,198 66,669,995 56,487,657 63.082,328 51,328,169 59,433,291 45,405,937 58,351.954 49,971,241 67,484,711 57,625,740 November .... 63,329,938 54,720,559 January February March April . Business volumes in January should be larger than a year ago in almost all lines, says the United Business Service in its current report. Improve- ment in consumer industries will be maintained. owing to larger industrial pay rolls, large-scale Government re- lief expenditures, higher dividend dis- bursements, and the favorable level of farm buying power. The outlook for the heavy industries varies considerably, according to the United Service. The best results over the near term are expected in auto- mofive lines, agriculture equipment, building, machinery and office equip- ment. The course of business beyond Jan- uary will depend to a great extent on pronouncements from the administra- tion and the legislation which the new Congress enacts. It must be remem- bered that decisions regarding codifi- cation of industry, labor relations (the “truce” is still on), housing, relief, public works, unemployment insur- ance, the soldiers’ bonus, and many other matters must be made. Congressional debates on these sub- jects will probably blow sentiment al- ternately hot and cold during the com- ing months, but a “middle course” policy is likely to be adopted on most issues. Confidence is therefore ex- pected to be fairly well maintained. Barney Offices Are Moved. ‘The Washington offices of Charles D. Barney & Co, New York Stock Exchange firm, opened for business today in their new location in the Shoreham Building, having made the shift over Sunday from their former headquarters in the Washington Building. Business was moving along smoothly in the new surroundings. The next broker office move in this city takes place Wednesday, when the consolidation of Harriman & Keech goes into effect and the two Wash- ington offices will operate under one roof at the Harriman Fifteenth street Yocation. The extensive changes in this office are nearly completed, in- cluding the installation of the electric quotation board. Washington brokers in general are hopeful for 1935 but are not making many predictions. One of the most vital factors in the securities picture is the manner in which the Security and Exchange Commission carries out its work. The amount of idle money awaiting investment may give the big securities markets a great deal of added activity, brokers state. Final Exchange Trading. ‘The final trading for 1934 on the Washington Stock Exchange took placs today, with very few changes in quotations. Capital Traction bonds closed the year at 90. Washington Gas 5s, 1958, appeared on the board in a $1,000 transfer at 100%:. Potomac Electric Power 6 per cent preferred wound up 1934 with a small sale at 1101, while the 5! per cent preferred moved at 110%. Capital Transit Co. stock ended the year's transactions with a 25- share turnover at 26. _— NEW YORK BANK STOCKS NEW YORK. NEW YORK, December 31.—Hold- ers of insurance stocks can look back on 1934 with much satisfaction. A combination of excellent underwriting results and rising liquidating values provided the background for one of the best market performances by insur- ance stocks in recent years. average of 20 representative issues, consisting of 15 fire insurance stocks, 3 casualty stocks and 2 life insurance stocks, shows an appreciation of over 41 per cent for the year. This compares with an appreciation crease in price at this time would have an advesse effect on business. DAIREN HAS BOOM. Dairen, Manchoukuo, is enjoying a building boom. The Hoit, Rose & Troster weighted , |STOCKS IRREGULAR AT HIGHER LEVELS Late Tone Fairly Firn. Many Small Gains Are Registered. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, December 31—Stock market prices were inclined to move slightly higher in the final trading session of 1934 today. Dealings were moderately active. The late tone was fairly firm, with advances of fractions to around a point prevailing in Con- solidate Gas, American Telephone, United States Steel, Bethlehem, Gen- eral Motors and Case. Transfers ap- proximated 950,000 shares. Advances of about % to 1 point appeared in American Telephone, Consolidated Gas, Public Service of N. J., Du Pont, Celanese, Radio pre- ferred A, Borg Warner, Schenley and a few others. In cash transactions, indicating further year-end dealings for tax and other purposes, Coca Cola rose 2 points and U. S. Smelting, 3. U. S. Steel and General Motors were about steady. Rails eased fractionally here and there and American Can lost & major fraction. Utilities gen- erally were firm. Consolidated Gas was actively bought for a time, as the market seemed to be impressed with the possibility that its proposal of inaugurating the “Washington plan” of rate reduction might bring a truce, but Mayor LaGuardia said he was “not impressed.” Brightest news as the year closed came from the steel and the automo- bile industries. Automobile production has reached such a pace that there is talk of possible shortages of skilled labor, January may see the largest production for that month since 1929. Steel and motor production has taken such a jump at the end of the year that Wall Street wondered if some important artificial influences might be at work. The final week of the year is normally a period of inventory shutdowns and reduced production in industry generally. INVESTMENT TRUSTS NEW YORK.
