LS BSHOPSTAR SL0LODTOPOPE Six Archbishops and Three Cardinals at Vatican During 1934, By the Assoclated Press. VATICAN CITY, December 29.— American bishops presented to Pope Pius more than $1,000,000 in gifts from their dioceses during 1934, the quinquennial year, when high Ameri- can prelates were required to visit the Vatican to give an accounting of their work. Prelates here made this estimate based on the fact that during the year the Pope received three Ameri- can cardinals, Mundelein, Chicago; Dougherty, Philadelphia, and O'Con- nell of Boston; 6 archbishops and 50 bishops. Most American bishops coming to Rome take up a collection in their dioceses before their departure, and bring the Pope a substantial check to be used in the administrative work of the church or for charity. This last quinquennial year was marked by an important innovation. One American cardinal, Mundelein, one archbishop and nine bishops were received by the Pope, not in the Vati- can, but at Castelgandolfo, where the Pope went for his vacation—the first time any Pope had spent the hot months outside the Vatican since 1870. In fact, Bishop Bernard J. Mahoney, Bioux Falls, S. Dak. was the first bishop received by the Pope at Castel- gandolfo. Immediately after him on | the same morning came three other | American bishops—Joseph F. Rum- mel, Omaha., Nebr.; Jules B. Jean- mard, Lafayette, La., and Richard O. Gerow, Natchez, Miss. MIAMI, Fla, December 20.—A double-barreled deriand for a clean- up of Miami was made today follow- ing the gdngland killings of an al- leged gambler and a bar operator. The Greater Miami Board of Trade asked the dismissal of all city officials and employes “who have failed to uphold law and order” and requested the City Commission to make prompt investigation of “laxity in law en- forcement that permitted our city to become a stronghold of murderous alien gangsters and organized crime.” Rev. Glann C. James, president of the Greater Miami Ministerial Asso- ciation, said a demand for a sweep- ing probe of gambling and other vice conditions in the county would be made by the organization at a meet- ing January 7. Authorities found themselves baf- fled in efforts to solve the recent kill- ings of George “Skeets” Downs, al- leged gambler, and Leo Bornstein, bar operator. The body of Downs, containing six bullet punctures, was found on a lonely road north of here Wednesday night. Bornstein recently was shot down as he left his apartment to an- swer a telephone in the building. Boys Drink Too Much. ST. LOUIS (#).—Jack Davis, 7, and Tony Tucker, 5, were rushed to the City Hospital by their parents after the boys came staggering down from an attic where they had been playing. Hospital attaches, marking their cases “acute alcoholism,” learned the boys had found a quart bottle of grape wine and, thinking it was “some new kind of soda pop,” drained most of it.
