FINANCIAL. BONDS REGITE SONE RECOVERE Few Utilities and Secondary Rails Still Under Sell- ing Pressure. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, December 22.—Scat- tered recoveries appeared in today's brief session of the bond market, but the list, as a whole, moved in an/| irregular range. ‘There was little change in the va- rious influances which recently have been affecting the investment situa- tion. Some of the utilities were still under pressure, as were a number of secondary rails. At the same time @ few of the power and light com- pany issues met mild support as did several carrier lines. Transfers totaled $5,839,000, par value, about the same as last Satur- day. The Standard Statistics Co. average for 60 domestic corporate loans was off one-tenth of a point at 854. On the week this composite showed a decline of six-tenths of a point. Gainers of a point or so included Alleghany Corp. 5s at 663;, Cleve- land Union Terminal 555 at 10214, Columbia Gas 5s at 82!, Consoli- dated Coal 5s at 311, Sharon Steel Hoop 5lbs at 78, Studebaker 6s at 43, Warren Bros. 6s at 33, and Youngs- town Sheet & Tube 5s at 9134, Among the outstanding losers were Iron Mountain 4s, off 214 at 62Y; Philadelphia Co. 5s, off 1% at 801 Manhattan Railway 4s, off 1 at 55; “Soo” Line refunding 6s, off 2 at 19; Interboro Rapid Transit 6s, off 3% at 62!4; Denver & Rio Grande 5s, off 1 at 20, and Bethlehem Steel 5s, off 35 at 1063;. The American Telephone group eased and that of Consolidated Gas steadied. United States Government securi- ties were rather inactive with minor Josses and gains about equally divided. In the foreign division German Agricultural Bank 6s of 1938 rallied 6 points to 51 and other Reich loans were firm. Improvement was also shown by issues of Argentina, Brazil end Colombia. FARMERS MAY HAVE NEW BUYING POWER ‘Winter Wheat and Cotton Export Situations Augur Well for 1935. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 22.— The possibility of further improvement in farmer purchasing power is entering the 1935 calculations of business ‘prophets. On the basis of acreage and condi- tion of the crop December 1, the De- partment of Agriculture figures the ‘Winter wheat crop should be about 70,000,000 bushels larger. This was not enough to disturb the market in view of the inroads made into the country’s supply this year, and yet it enhanced farmers’ pros- pects. Cotton exports picked up markedly the last week. A larger cotton crop also is counted on for 1935, although the time for planting it is still months away. INVESTMENT TRUSTS NEW YORK. The changes af- fected various groups, but none was substantial. Seasonal dullness ruled in the buying, but contracting for early 1935 business was of satisfac- tory volume. Shipments were con- fined strictly to immediate needs. Higher contract prices were named on red oxide of copper and nickel salt. No change was made in the price of nickel chloride. Contract prices on creosote oil were still awaited. Cur- rent quotations were advanced on red lead and litharge in car lots, on acetylsalicylic acid, menthol and domestic casein. The Chicago list on dried blood and tankage was higher. The Reporter's composite index numbver of prices for heavy and fine chemicals advanced from 125.4 to the early December mark of 125.5 (com- pared with August 1, 1914, as 100). In comparison with average prices in 1926 (as 100), the Reporter’s index number Is now 88.8, against 90.0 at this time last year. o FLORISTS ARE BUSY SUPPLYING DEMAND | Increased Buying of Fresh Flow- ers Reported With Brisk Trade in Christmas Greens. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 22.—Never since the start of the depression have orchids and gardenias competed so vigorously with the popular holiday poinsettias, white and red; the arau- caria tree, ardesias and white camel- lias. Demand for Christmas greens of quality likewise is the best since 1929, with fancy holly, selected pine, high-grade laurel roping and mistle- toe, abundant with large white berries, moving briskly at firm prices. Leading florists ascribed some of their rush business to the opening of the Metropolitan Opera season, but the smart stores and specialty shops stressed fashions and the trend toward entertainment as responsible for the better buying of fresh flowers. Christ- mas plants moved swiftly. This year 228 cars of Christmas trees arrived at principal metropolitan terminals. A year ago today only 167 cars were reported in these markets. Fancy goods are snapped up and the lower grades neglected. (Copyright. 1934} AR e INSURANCE STOCKS NEW YORK.
