HE HAD EVER I—" A cold partly open door. Prentiss forgot what he had started to say; instead | he mumbled a hasty, “Good after- noon,” and strode out the door, not | even bothering to close it. | As he passed through the outer office he felt that all eyes were upon | him, calmly appraising his failure, cataloging his as “just another one.” Doubtless he was only one among countless others who had failed to | make the grade, but somehow he had never thought of himself as one of them. Ever since high school days when he had sung in the school operettas and glee clubs he had cherished an ambition to make his mark some day as a singer, and to that end he had | bent all his efforts. | A month ago the executive staff of | WLNK had announced special audi- [tions to select new talent for com- mercial work. Those who won favor- able comment from the judges were to be put on a special broadcast. and later put under the sponsorship of an advertiser. Thursday | morning, the day of the special broad- | cast, found Prentiss sitting on the | edge of his bed reading a letter from his mother. “And at 3 o'clock Thurs- day well all be listening, John. Best of luck.” The words seemed to leap out at him. They were so sure of him. There We'll see you again, | have to sing this afternoon. At 3 o'clock John was sitting among the guests in the audition studio, thanks to the ef- forts of the sympa- thetic girl at the switchboa 'd. Grim- ly he surveyed the crowd around him —the successful applicants, their flushed, excited rel- atives and friends, the green-smocked men, looking bored. Then John's at- | tention riveted on the announcer, who was handling the crowd with good-natured condescension. Lookint at the clock over the announcer’s head, John saw that five minutes were left of the broadcast. Turning to face the orchestra, his gun quickly concealed within his coat, John addressed the mike: “The next voice you hear will be that of John Prentiss of Colchester, who will sing the prologue to the opera ‘Pagliacci.” The orchestra leader gaped in amazement at this highly irregular | procedure—and looked inquiringly at | the announcer. who was edging away from John. The announcer smiled reassuringly, and the pianist quickly ran through the introduction to the aria. Then John sang—sang better than he had ever sung before. He knew it He'd be a civic hero now! Maybe the mayor would greet him. Probably they'd have a parade. He straightencd proudly, and once again addressed the mike, unmindful of the gathering murmur from the studio crowd. “That was John Prentiss of Col- chester,” he began, then suddenly his heart seemed to rise in his throat and choke him. The little red light at the base of the mike which indi- cated that it was functioning, was not burning! John remembered the | announcer’s grasping the mike—sure enough! The switch was pointing | to “oft.” A hollow, ribald bellow of laughter startled him. He glanced to his right, and saw for the first time the dimly lighted windows of a control room. Three men were inside—one of them the announcer. The announcer’s voice boomed through the speaker into the studio “Go ahead, brother,” he was say- ing. “Have a good time.
