Featured at Popular Club Independent Paper To Criticize Long Talked by L. S. U. Suspended Students Say President Smith Will Not Block Plan. By the Assoclated Press. BATON ROUGE, La., November 29. —Lousiana State University students, seeking a medium for criticism of Sen- ator Huey P./Long, turned today to the possibility of an independent newspaper. Samuel A. Montague, president of the journalism students and one of 26 suspended for protesting the censor- ship placed on the Reveille, student publication, said James M. Smith, president of the university, told him he would have no objection to an in- dependent organ. President Smith continued to main- tain, however, that the university was morally, legally and financially re- sponsible for the Reveille, and would maintain supervision over it. The entire staff of the Reveille re- signed Monday after they were told their articles would have to be ap- proved by a faculty supervisor. Long has maintained a neutral atti- tude in the campus controversy. President Smith said & number of the suspended students had asked for reinstatement. “Being a reasonable man,” he said, “I will consider each application on its merits. Thus far, however, there have been no reifistatements and there is no change in the situation.” German Women Pilloried. Because they refused to contribute to the one-pot Sunday collection and to buy amber brooches sold by the Winter Relief Organization, five wom- en of Holtensen, Hanover, and one of Hanover have been pilloried in the newspapers as enemies of the people.
