FI A—10 ¥ RANSIT EARNINGS ATSN9.76 MARK Eleven-Month Total Shows Huge Gain Under Con- solidation. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Yotal net earnings of the Capital Transit Co. in the first 11 months under consolidated operations amount- ed to $919,576.15, according to a sur- vey of income made since the October statement was filed with the Public Utilities Commission. This summary includes the December, 1933, net of $118,392.58, that being the month in which the merger went into effect, and the first 10 months of the present fiscal year. Detailed figures from Capital Tran- { sit's October report show that operat- ing revenues totaled $763,293.68, oper- ating expenses, taxes and depreciation amounted to $631,491.11, leaving an operating income of $131,802.57. Non- operating income was $14,850.83, mak- ing gross stand at $146,653.40. De- ductions from gross called for $56.- 414.48, leaving net income for the month of $90,238.92. The main factor in this surprising showing was the car- rying on the company’s lines of 12,- 479,981 revenue passengers. Returns for the first 10 months of this year are even more impressive. Operating revenues totaled $6,963,- 668.94. Operating expenses amounted to $4,747,293.18, taxes took $489,176.29 and depreciation $490,772.20, making a total of $5,736.241.67. This left a 10 months’ operating income of $1,-1 227.427.27. Non-operating income during the period totaled $140,791.90, placing gross income, less operating expenses, taxes and depreciation, stand at $1,- 368,219.17. Deductions from gross re- quired $567,035.60, which left the street car company with a total net income of $801.183. Revenue pas- sengers carried on the company's lines during the 10 months made a grand total of 107,170,596, Net of $4.20 a Share Likely. An analysis of Capital Transit's earnings during the past 11 months, prepared by Y. E. Booker & Co., local investment house, being distributed today, includes an estimate of prob- able earnings for the first full year's operations. The Booker review says that if the November earnings are as good as those for October, which seems assured, total net for the first 12 months will be $1,009,000, or $4.20 a share on the outstanding capital stock and coverage on bond interest by approximately 23, times. The analysis adds that sufficient time has now elapsed to indicate that the remarkable improvement in earn- ings 1s to be lasting; in fact, the trend 1s upward, after allowing for seasonal variations in traffic. In the first 11 months the company carried 157,453,- total revenues amount- 316.41, while total ex- penses, taxes and depreciation re- quired $6,239.105.33. During the pe- riod dozens of new buses have been purchased, many cars have been add- ed to the service and more than 500 additional men have been employed. ‘The review concludes: “In analyzing the above figures, due consideration should be given to the recent application filed by the com- pany with the Public Utilities Com- mission for permission to increase its depreciation charges from $600,000 to $900.000 annually. “Had this amount of additional de- preciation been charged during the past year, it would, of course, have reduced the total net earnings to $709,000, or $2.95 a share, and would have reduced the bond coverage to two and one-half times. “In either event, the earnings rec- ord is an excellent one and places both the stock and bonds of this com- pany in an entirely different light 1rom the standpoint of the investor.” Olds Joins Stock Exchange. The board of governors of the Wash- ington Stock Exchange has elected Ed- son B. Olds, jr, who is witah Brown, Goodwyn & Co., to membership on the Exchange. The new member is the son of the late Edson B. Olds, who died only a few weeks ago after being connected with the Union Trust Co. for more than 30 years, holding a vice presidency at the time of his demise. Born and reared in Washington, Mr. Olds attended Tech High School and the University of Maryland. He has been active in the financial district for the past seven years. The firm with which he is connected is located in the American Security & Trust Co. Building and is one of the younger in- vestment houses in the city. The partners are L. Clark Brown and Wilfred L. Goodwyn, jr. The con- cern has been specializing in munici- pal bonds. The company has now de- cided to broaden its activities in the local financial field. Securing a seat for Mr, Olds on the Washington Ex- change is one of the first steps toward this end. $5.000,000 New Bonds Sold. ‘More than $5.000,000 of the $8,000,- 000 Republic of Finland 4 per cent notes have already been sold, accord- ing to reports from New York. The total issue, offered by Brown Harriman & Co., Edward B. Smith & Co., Lee Higginson Corp. and the First Boston Corp., was $10.000,000, but $2.000,000 of the notes were retained by the Bank of Finland and not offered in this country. William Niller, manager of the Wash- ington office of Brown Harriman & Co., has been distributing to clients some most interesting data on the credit position of Finland. Little Finland's payment of Government ob- ligations has been a lesson and shin- ing example to the whole world. Incidentally, new domestic issues of municipal and other bonds have been offered more frequently recently and are being favorably received. Such issues have recently been one of the features in the bond market. Today’s Trading on Exchange. ‘Washington Railway & Electric pre- ferred led trading on the Washington Stock Exchange today, four sales tak- ing place at 100!:. Ten shares of Capital Transit came out at 28, off 3; point from yesterday. Lanston Monotype sold ex-dividend at 48, un- changed from the last sale, and 10 shares of Libérty National Bank stock appeared on the board at 75. The Washington Exchange, all the banks and all the brokerage houses in the city will be closed tomorrow, ‘Thanksgiving day. The Irving Trust Co. has declared the regular quarterly dividend of 25 cents per share. Considerable of the stock is held locally. President F. P. H. Siddons of the District Bankers’ Association, ad- dressed the weekly luncheon yesterday of the Washington Association of Credit Men. He spoke on money and credit, the meeting being held at the Raleigh Hotel. Local banks are displaying large posters advertising the Washington Better Homes Exposition, now being held at the bus center on Pennsyl- vania avenue, between Sixth and Sev- enth streets. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, November 28.—The stock market had a firm tone today. ‘There was some scattered selling dur- ing the forenoon, but late buying in utilities and metals strengthened the general list. Consolidated Gas more than canceled an early point loss. Advances of around 1 to 2 points were recorded by American Telephone, United States Steel, Public Service of New Jersey, United States Smelting, Case, Union Pacific and International Cement. Transfers approximated 1,- 100,000 shares. Leading commodities also mani- fested the holiday spirit. Wheat and corn rose major fractions to a cent a bushel in the earlier hours, and cot- ton about 50 cents a bale. Bonds were steady to firm. Shares advancing about 1 to 2 points by early afternoon included United States Steel, Chrysler, Case, International Harvester, Douglas, Al- lied Chemical, Union Pacific, Atlantic Coast Line, du Pont, Spiegel-May- Stern and George W. Helme. Issues up fractionally included American Can, Republic Steel, Bethlehem, Gen- eral Motors, Deere, Santa Fe, Union Carbide, United Aircraft, Socony Vacuum, and others. Consolidated Gas lost about a point, evidently in response to the proposed New York City utilities tax of 3 per cent. The proposed city sales tax of 2 per cent may have been a factor in a sag or more than a point in Macy, but other local merchandising shares were quiet and about unchanged. American Telephone, New York Central and i Standard of New Jersey sagged frac- tions. Favorable midweek trade statistics together with further encouraging div- idend news, evidently kept the mar- ket on the upgrade. G. W. Helme di- rectors ordered extra dividends total- ing $6.75 a share, which had evidently | been largely discounted in the recent |advance of the stock, for it slid off momentarily on the announcement. Hercules Powder directors ordered an extra of 75 cents, in addition to the regular, and late yesterday American directors ordered an extra disburse- ment of $1 a share. —_ ‘| DIVIDENDS RESUMED. | NEW YORK, November 28 (#).—In- | ternational Cement Corp. resumed | dividends with the declaration of a ’23 cent disbursement on the capital | stock, payable December 31, to stock of record December 11.
