Dissolves Jury. Yesterday the grand jurors tiied to make a report to Judge Frank T. Eche- zabal, but as soon as they came before the bar the judge dissolved the jury | and ordered a new one drawn. ‘The| judge told the jurors that he was dis- missing them “to terminate a condition which brings the courl as & whole into disrepute.” ABDUCTION, BEATING LAID TO THREE MEN Alleged Victim Says He Was Taken to Speakeasies, Suspected of Being Informer. A tale of being severely beaten and then taken on a wild round of speak- easies by three men who sought to identify him as & police informer was told in Police Court yesterday by James Barger, 26, of the 400 block of M street southwest. His story resulted in holding Pete Smith, 26, for action of the grand jury | on_charges of assault and robbery. Barger told Judge Issac R. Hiit he was seated in a lunch room in the 600 block of Seventh street southwest ‘Tuesday afternoon when three men ap- proached and adked if he was inter- ested in buying s boat. When he re- plied in the afMrmative, he said, he was driven to the foot of Pirst street southwest. There the men accused him of being a police Informer and attacked him. He was searched by Smith, who took 75 cents—all the money he had—he said. After Smith threatened to kill him, he charged, he was taken on the tour of the speakeasies. where bartenders were asked to identify him as an in- former. Finally. he said, he escaped from the automobile and went to the fourth precinct and told his story. Smith, arrested as a result of Bar- ger's story, was identified Tuesday night in a line-up at police headquar- ters. The other two men are being sought. Esperanto Lessons Free.
