Asked $35,000./ By the Associated Press. | NEW YORK, August 3.—Nathan | Baskowitz was home today—the first | kidnap victim to be bought back on credit. Shortly after police proclaimed that | Baskowitz, a sports promoter, “hasn’t got 35 cents to his name,” kidnapers re- leased him last night under a nothing- | down-and-easy-payment plan. Baskowitz was seized Monday night | by five gunmen who snatched him from | in front of the home of friends. His brother, known as Artie Bass and asso- | ciated with Humbert Fugazy, another | sports promoter, received a letter de- manding $35,000. Artie proceeded to outtalk the kid- | napers. He said, according to reports reaching police, that while he did not have a large sum handy at the moment, h!s credxt ::s good and he could pay Yesterfluv Chief Inspector John J. Sullivan said that the kidnaped man “really hasn't got 35 cents.” Whether that influenced the kidnapers was not known, but at any rate, a few hours later. Baskowitz arrived in a taxicab at the Fugazy bowl in Coney Island. He said his captors had blindfolded him and kept him in a building, the location of which he did not learn. On the whole, he said, they treated him well. 'MRS. COOLEY DEATH INQUIRY CONTINUED Deputy Coroner Murphy Says Skull ‘ Was Not Fractured, but Foul ‘ Play Likely. Members of the police homicide squad have been instructed to continue | their investigation of the death of Mrs. Helen Cooley, 35, exacuy as though it were a murder,” Deputy Coroner Christopher J. Murphy said today. Dr. Murphy, who performed an autopsy on Mrs. Cooley's body. said her skull had not been fractured, as had been previously reported. She had a severe head injury, however, and was badly bruised, he said. “The injuries could have been re- ceived in a fall” !he post-mortem physician continued, “but it seems | more likely, at present, that she met with foul piay.” Analyses of the woman's blood and | the contents of her stomach are being \made by the District chemist, and a | report is expected tomorrow. | Mrs. Cooley was found unconscious |on the floor of her room at 1114 Eleventh street Tuesday night and died a short time later in Emergency Hospital. William F. Kelley, 53, oc- cupant of another room on the same floor and said to have been friendly with Mrs. Cooley, is being held for in- | vestigation. 'DUKE TREATMENT ;’ AT HOSPTIAL PROBED After reviewing all evidence in the case of Casco L. Duke, who died July 24 of the effects of a fractured skull, Dr. Luther H. Reichelderfer, president of the Board of District Commissioners, announced today he was satisfied with the treatment received by the patient ! while at Emergency Hospital. Duke was taken to the hospital July 22 and was treated there for intoxica- tion. some hours later being removed | to No. 3 police precinct station. where he was charged with being drunk. A ! short time later, when police believed ! he was ill, he was sent to Gallinger, where he was treated for a fracture of the skull. He died after an operation. Dr. Reichelderfer, himself a surgeon, today found no blame to be attached to the diagnosis of the case at Emergency Hospital, since the evidence was that ithe man was suffering from intoxica- tion. He pointed out that in certain types of cases it is impossible for physi- cians to determine for as much as 36 | hours if there is a skull fracture. This was the case in this instance, he found. -l MAIN OFFICE 1332 5th St. N.E.
