MRS. BUCK LEAVES WITH NO REGRET Novelist Explains Feeling in Glving Up Missionary Post. By thg Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 3.—Pearl 3. Buck, ®he povelist, is quitting her life as a ary with nelther rancor nor re- gret, she sald today in her first ex- tended pronouncement since her resig- jpation was accepted by the Presbyterian Board of Missions. “I feel just as I did before,” sald Mrs. Buck. “Of course, I didn't know I was such a nuisance to the board before all this came up, and certainly 1 shouldn't want to continue a nuisance. One wouldn't like to stay with any organization that one was & nuisance to, would one? “You see, I never did do the evan- gelical sort of thing anyway. I was a teacher, and I haven't even been teaching for three years or so. “So I expect to go back to China and to continue my life just where I left off, only without the formal title of missionary. By my life 'I mean my writing, which takes up a great deal of my time, indeed, and my job of being @ wife and a mother, “I'm still devoted to China, and I imagine I always shall be. China is my home and I am happy there. I'm sure all this will make no difference to me or to my friends, “Nor do 1 harbor any resentment at all about the tangle or its results. You wee, I'm still a Christian. P'm a Chris- uan by conviction and shall continue one. My status as a missionary or as a lay member has nothing to do with that. “Am T still a Presbyterian? Surely— oh, well, I don't think that’s very im- portant. I don't go in for' creeds and that sort of thing so very much. I'm just a Christian.” Prettiest STUDENTS HONORED CO-ED AT ALABAMA SCHOOL. By student vote at Alabama Poly- technic Institute, Auburn, Vera Frances Pruet of Opelika, Ala., was chosen as the prettiest co-ed in the student body. —A. P. Photo. MANY GET TOBACCO JOBS RICHMOND, Va, May 3 (#)— Speeding up of the wheels of the to- bacco industry here was-indicated to- day as one company reported adding between 75 and 100 workers and an- other called back 30 during the last week. Others have increased working hours and are running close to capacity on their present work basis. Increased demand, particularly for cigarettes, was credited with bringing about the improvement.
