FINANCIAL BONDS IRREGULAR ON PROFIT TAKING U. S. Treasury Issues and Foreign Dollar Group Show Strength. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 3.—After the first wave of buying of speculative bonds to- day there was enough profit-taking to cause net declines. The market, like that in stocks, was nervous and showed signs of having been over-bought in some sections. The strength of foreign dollar bonds of countries still on gold was the fea- ture in that department of the market. There were further gains in United States Treasury loans. During the first hour conspicuous strength was shown in a dozen or more junior rail bonds. New high pri were made for the movement in New York Central refunding 4l5s, Nickel Plate 5':s, Southern Railway 4s and 615, Baltimore & Ohio refunding 5s and 6s, Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul general 415s, Illinois Central 6155, Great Northern 7s and Denver & Rio Grande consolidated 4s. Advances in these bonds ranged from slightly less than a point to 2 points. They have gained anywhere from 15 to 20 points from their low levels of the year. This in itself was an influence in urging a cer- tain amount of realizing sales by those who have profited by the inflation propaganda. At the same time there was distinct heaviness in a number of the first grade railroad mortgages like Atchison gen- eral 4s and Union Pacific first 4s, which were off ’; to !> point. Northern Pa- cific first 4s, however, extended by a point their Tise on Tuesday of 215 points at the same time that the 6s declined a point. Chesapeake Corpora- tion 5s touched 80 and then reacted. Movements in the public utility bonds were featured by a rise of 41> points in American Water Works collateral 5s, due next year, which had advanced 3 points yesterday, and of 2 points in North American Edison 5s. Western Union 6'>s gained another point and are now up nearly 25 points from their low. Postal Telegraph 5s rose a point. The strength of French government and city bonds, as well as those of Prench railroads, reflected the prospect of paying coupons on these bonds on & In this group there were 5 to 2 points. Swiss and Butch bonds were aiso strong and Ca- nadians firm. Germans were inclined to heaviness, while the trade agreement between Great Britain and Argentina had an adverse effect on the 6 per cent dollar loans of the South American republic. Favorable comment was made on the licy of Shell Union Co., as indicated i” its annual Teport, of purchasing over $21,000,000 of its debentures. bonds have ‘fluctuated in the past year bemeen 86 and 47 and are now around T nited States Treasury loans_were again strong. The average gain in the first half of the session was ¥4 point. The municipal bond market was slight- 1y better on old issues and the sale of new bonds by the cities of Rochester | and Utlca encouraged dealers in this | section of the list. NEW YORK, May 3.—Strength of public utilities and weakness of ofls to- day featured irregular price trends on the Curb Exchange. Electric Bond & Share, American Gas & Electric, Niagara-Hudson Power, Con- solidated Gas of Baltimore, American Light & Traction, and National Power & Light preferred led the upswing. Standard Oil of Indiana and Humble Ol led the descent of the olls. Citles Serv- ice was virty unch; 3 Bidding up of public utilities followed publication of the weekly electric con- sumption statistics, which showed the Gocline thus far this year. Then. too, this group has been behind the market, for traders have let them alone because of agitation for lower rates—an argument that is likely to be forgotten during s period of inflation, for all the costs that enter into power will go up wl th other commodities and services. Passing of the Bocony-Vacuum divi- dend and hzlvlnx of the Standard Ofl of California payment, following un- favorable reports, would have been sufficient unsettle petroleum issues. Added to this influence were the weekly mumm. which showed a }g price that it would tend to reduce A h’uk of 3 points in Huml followed its announcement ub:l-': % would pay the “going price” for East Texas crude. During tnis stage of the session Gulf Oil was off 2 points and of hovered other automotive accessories in the race to new high ground. Pioneer Gold stood out in Canadian gold mines. Pep- perell Manufacturing was a strong spot in the textiles. Dow Chemical dupli- cated its previous high. Swift International sold off some- what, as traders were not sure what chnnna the reported British-Argentine would make in the com- plny 's business, most of it being exports to Great Britain and the United States. Swift & Co., parent of the South Am- erican subsidiary, was slightly lower for the same reason. U. 5 TREASURY BALANCE.
