WOMEN’'S ‘FEATURES. Conquering Contract BY P. HAL SIMS: Mr. Sims is universally acclaimed the greatest living contract and auc- tion player. He was captain of the renowned “Four Horsemen” team and has won 24 national champion- ships since 1924. These articles are based on the Sims system, which in- cludes the one-over-ome principle which the Sims group of players was the first to empioy and develop. Responding to One No Trump With 5-4-2-2 Distribution. N discussing the weakest hands with which to make a takeout in a five-card sult, I have so far assumed that we were dealing with normal distributions such as 5-3-3-2 cr 5-4-2-2. I should add that with 5-4-2-2 I do not consider it neces- sary to bid the 4-card suit secondarily, even if it be a biddable major suit, over a two no trump rebid. I find 1t best to treat the majority of such semi-two- suiter hands as one-suiters. and to decide on the sec- ond round whether to raise to two n2> trumps or to rebid the five-card suit solely on the grounds already explained for_5-3- 3-2 hands. I am partial to no trump contracts when I give the declarer support or working material in two suits. The fact that I expect him to find practical use for nine of my cards outweighs the weakness of two worth- less doubletons. ‘When Opener Makes Appeal. An exception would occur if the opener suddenly showed a reluctance to rebid in no trumps by raising my first suit. Then, if my second suit were & major and biddable, I would bid it in the expectation that this information would give the needed assurance of safety In no trumps. My partner may well be weak in that second suit. and may be afraid only of that weakness for no trump play. For instance, holding Ssp. KQxx DLe@xxxx Hts. x x X cLxx if the bidding went—one no trump, two diamonds, three diamonds by open- ing bidder instead of two no trumps, I would infer that my partner wanted me to bid, if I could, a suit of higher rank than the diamonds. If my secondary suit bid were not the one he was hoping for, he would either pass it or take me back to the first suit. For instance, if with the above hand my second bid of three spades, over his raise in diamonds, did not clear up the no trump situation for him because it was hearts that he need- ed to know about, he could either pass three spades or bid four diamonds, for 2 safer contract. If he is dangerously weak in hearts. his strength in the other suits should make either contract —three spades or four diamonds, whichever he may prefer—fairly safe. Since I had bid diamonds first and spades afterward, he would understand that I had only four spades. Otherwise, this order of bidding would result only frox six and five card holdings in these suits, respectively. In such event the ding hand would take control and play the hand in one of the two suits. Declarer knows, of course, that any minor suit in which a takeout is made must be of five or more cards. When I discuss the rebidding pro- cedure of the opener in a later article, it will be far clearer to you why his raise of the responder’s suit, in prefer- ence to reverting to no trumps, makes it safe and advisable to bid a four-card major secondarily. 5-4-2-2 With Both Major Suits Biddable. Holding spades K J X X, Hearts Q X X X X, with two worthless minor suit doubletons, if the bidding went—one no trump, two hearts, two no trumps— I would bid three hearts as the warning rebid. ‘To bid three ‘would be an indication of strength, ly mis- leading. However, if' on the second round my partner bid three hearts, I would bid three spades. It that is all he needs to know in order to bid three no , the hand will have been skillfully bi Possibly his weakness is elsewhere and he hoped that I could bid (8) a five-card minor suit secondarily to protect his weak spot and make no trumps safe. or (b) three no trumps on distributed protection. Not obtaining 8 favorable rebid from me, he can bid four hearts. ‘We have ‘l fit in that suit, ll’;g no damage of importance can result. If we are down a trick, it is just an unfortunate hand_ which would not quite match up. It would have been worse in no trumps, presumably, with Jess chance of the opponents misplay- ing the defense. The opener will know that my spades are a four-card ‘holding because I bid hearts, the lower ranking suit, first. This also marks my heart suit definitely as consisting of five cards. . To like sweets is “to have a sweet tooth!” And this really quaint ex- pression is not questioned, for every- body knows its meaning. Having a sweet tooth may be a mod- ern weakness, but the expression is early English, going back to the second half of the sixteenth century. Its origin is found in the well known old work of John Lyly, “Euphues and His England,” where we find: “I am glad that my Adonis hath a sweete tooth in his head.” > (Copyright, 1033.)
