FINANCIAL GOVERNMENT BOND :J4ST IN RECOVERY _Degline of Last Few Days Is iChecked as Support Occurs. _BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 21 —The most fmpressive feature of the bond market today was the early recovery in United States Government loans and in a number of the high-grade dcmestic cor- poration issues thct have lately been under pressure. In the one instance .the, strength in Governments is believed ta represent support through the Fed- eralReserve and in the other the with- drawing of offerings that have been in Jarge volume and have threatened to bring: about a serious decline in issues of the best type. Another significant trend was the rise 4n practically gll foreign dcllar bonds .except those of Germany. This again ted the transferring of funds as & phase of the inflation conditions. Mundcipal bonds were steadier along with Governments, although the serious troubles of a number of the largest American municipalities weigh heavily | .on.the market for municipal paper. i +nmv view of the extreme speculation | in rajiroad stocks, it was only natural that there should have been a further rise--in low-grade railroad bonds. AThese, however, were as much influ- enced by inflationary tendencies as by the .action of stocks and the rise in them: preceded that in stocks. Gains of. 240 4 points occurred in the junior isaues, of the Missouri Pacific, Chicago & -Northwestern, Erie, Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central, Southern | Railway, Great Northern, Denver &| Rig, Grande and Texas Pacific. At the same-time a steadier tone in all high- grage: bonds was reflected in an im- provement in prices of Union Pacific, Atehison and Pennsylvania issues. ... Fhe pressure was lifted from most of the high-grace public utilities like Amgrican Telephone & Telegraph, Con- Zolldaid Gas, Duquesne Light and yweg Electric Light & Power, all of Which, showed moderate recovery. On she er hand, Brooklyn Union Gas 5s were down 1 to 3 points. The secopd and third grade public utilities moved more cautious than on Thurs- day, but were still at higher levels. ‘Wastern Union 5s gained 2': points, which, carried them 10 points above their ;yecent low. Postal Telegraph 5s around 25 compared with 16 a short| time Ago. | While German government bonds were off 2 to 3 points, French 7s ad- vanged 2'. points to the highest price | f the.year. Dutch East Indies 6s rose g 0infs (o the best this year, with the dollar -doans of Denmark. Norway, Bel- _gium., Argentine, Brazil, Chile and Italy all substantially higher. - At the opening and during the first Ralf, of the session there were rallies in- United States Government loans ranging from 1 to 3; point and cover- ing nearly the entire list. This ad- vance gradually lessened, but there was enough buying power to keep the group su!y and no evidence of urgent liqui- xuon as had been the case for several ¥s,, The test of Government credit under the new conditions will be given in the bid for discount bills to be made | shortly This will compare with the most recent offering on a basis of slightly less than 'z of 1 per cent. BY CHAS. P. SHAEFFER, Associated Press Business Writer. The radio industry may be listed as among the heavy sufferers from the depression of the last few years. Officlal statistics compiled by the industry’s trade tions reveal that 1932 sales of all radio producty was but 23 per cent of the total of such sales for the peak year 1929, when 14 the aggregate was $843,000,000. year the total was but $196,000,000. Falling prices were the main con« tributors to the year’s adverse shows ing, the figures revealed, as the nums ber of sets employed on December 31 14 | Were greater than ever before, amount~ ing to 16,810,000. The average price of a set for the 1, | year was placed at $48, as compared | with $133 in 1929, while tubes av- feraged $1.10 last year in contrast with $2.50 in 1929. The average life of a radio set at present is five years, reduced by the | fact that the number of sets in use kel the number installed during the five years ended with 1932. Consequently, the trade expects that replacements during 1933 should equal the 1928 in- stallation of 3,281,000 sets, in addition to the demand created by new cus- tomers. It is calculated that at least 13,000,000 families in the United States | are_witbout radios. ‘|, The number of new sets sold during the last year are calculated at 2.620.000, compared with 4,438,000 in 1929. Tube sales last year amounted to about 44,- Gg 1 300,000, as against 69,000,000 in 1929. 131y Sherwin-Will (1)..1600s 22% 10% Silica Gel ct. . 3 % 20 1% 3508 13 3 2 1% 2% 14% 9 Dividend rates in dollars based on quarterly or :1;::@:} :hrlly extra. 1Plus yable in cash s q or stock. stock. NEW YORK, April 21.—Cotton prices on the local exchange today opened |14 to 18 points higher. In Liverpool | prices advanced 25 to 29 points in quiet trading. CHICAGO, April 21.—Despite an- nouncement of administration plans for $3,000,000,060 inflation, grain prices took an early downward swing today. | Selling orders predominated in all pits and new buying was in smaller volume than recently. Opening unchanged to lower, wheat soon showed losses of 1!, cents a bushel all around. Corn started % {off to 13 up and subsequently under- went a general setback. Increased buying of wheat developed i 10% | on price breaks, and at times rallied *4 | the market rapidly to well above yes- | terday’s finish. A large part of ghe " |buying on setbacks was attributed to houses with Eastern connections. Reports of highly beneficial rains in some dry areas of the domestic Winter wheat region West and Southwest acted. however, as a drag on the mnrx;kiet. lends of higher prices ed, inevenhelus. that' rains’ mow meant 1 | only surface relief for wheat crops, and that it woul take many recurring rain- s falls to make good the subsurface defi- « | clency ofm.n;ol‘lture. Some authorities asserted or all practical purposes the ending of drought came t.og late to restore conditions in the bulk of hard wheat territory. A sharp fall in the price of silver was without any appar- ent influence on the wheat market. Cogxol_n‘:n?uil u:;lyed with wheat.
