Y FINANCIAL. BONDS ARE STRONG +IN BRISK TRADING Both Domestic and Foreign Groups Score Numerous Advances. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 13.—The bond market today went contrary to all tra- dition in showing decided strength in the face of the inflationary movement in stocks and the decided weakness ebroad in the dollar. Opening quiet, with the main inci- dent another sharp break in German dollar loans, the market developed con- siderable strength in the afternoon, when not only domestic, but foreign bonds advanced and the United States ‘Treasury list seemed to indicate quite clearly that there would be no call fil Saturday for the fourth Liberty Ais. ‘The advances were largest in the speculative bond list, although some good gains occurred in high-grade issues ‘which respond normally to easy money rates. Goodrich 6s rose 3% points. Goodyear 5s were up 1% points. Ameri- can & Foreign Power 5s gained 2 points International Telephone & Telegraph 5s were up 1. points and Western Tnion issues from 1 to 2 points. In the rail list there were substantial mdvances in Erie, Canadian Pacific. Alleghany Corporation, and Chesapeake Corporation bonds. The higher-grade securities, like those of American Tele- phone & Telegraph, Consolidated Gas of New York and Union Pacific and Atchison, were all firm. Opening lower and shortly afterward Ehowing loss#s of 11, to 2 points, with the Government 75 at a new low for the year, the list of gierman bonds recov- ered sharply in the afternoon and at one time had made a net improvement on the day. The rest of the foreign list Wwas quiet. ‘With the fourth Liberty 4Y4s bid for 3n large blocks at 1021 and better, it ‘was apparent that all prospects for call- ing this issue on Saturday had dis- mppeared and other Treasury loans im- proved with it. The first Liberty 315s were particularly strong, while gains from 13 to Y; occurred in the long- Sferm premium and discount issues. {Treasury notes were likewise firm, with lums of as much as 2, points on the 4);s due next December and of nearly as large an amount on notes that are not payable until the Summer of 1936. Banks were reported to be substantial buyers of all Government issues today. CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKET CHICAGO, April 13 (# (United BOND UNITED STATES. (Sales are in $1.000.) High. NEW YORK, April 13.—Following custom, security and commodity ex- changes in New York and throughout the country will close tomorrow in ob- servance of Good Priday. Most com- modity exchanges will also suspend business on Saturday. Those which will the suspension from Thi night over Sunday include the Cotton, Coffee and Sugar, National Metal, Rub- ber, Cottonseed Oil and Cocoa ex- changes. New York security markets, the Chicago Boird of Trade and Na- tional Silk Exchange will transact busi- ness on Saturday. SEASONAL RETAIL SALES ARE BRISK Easter Doll, Toy and Novelty Shipments Greater Than Last Year. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 13.—Retail sales of Easter dolls and toys in the United States will approximate $35,000,000. This estimate allows for prices 25 per cent below those of last season. It is based on trade reports that show whole- sale shipments 20 per cent ahead of last Easter. Unlike in 1932 many of these nov- elties are neither German nor Japa- nese made, but of domestic manufac- ture. Recent events in Germany re- sulted in the cancellation of orders or the return to importers here of many seasonal toys. In the East, Japanese goods replaced German merchandise, but in ‘West, Midwest and Souf preference is being given to American products. Various Lines Benefited. Although London has staged Easter gift campaigns—mostly in wearing ap- parel rather than toys—such promo- tions have not been tried here. The betterment in a long list of seasonal goods, nngln: from dolls, toys, post cards, children's books, religious arti- cles, candies and their various acces- sories has been brought about by im- provement in various lines of trade throughout this country. e The Easter playthings include 5,000,- 000 rabbits, retailing from a few cents to $50 each; nearly the same number of chickens, displaying a_price range from several cents to $5; numerous teddy bears, monkeys, dogs and circus animals; party novelties, like chicken and rabbit favors; and noise makers, chiefly cackling hens. Most of the lat- ter are handled by street hawkers. The rabbits are made from real or synthetic fur, plush, stockinet cotton cloth or paper, and provide employment for many hands in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Most of the chickens are small, made of cot- ton. The so-called “natural ducks and chicks,” contrary to the public belief, are artificial. Many mechanical toys are sold by street vendors, while chicken coops, straw baskets, egg_boxes, excelsior and moss are handled chiefly by stores. Stuffed animals range in size from eight inches to five feet. They are made chiefly of silk hair, plush, felt flannel, real pelt or stockinet cotton, and they are stuffed with cotton, wool, excelsior or kapok., Wooden and papier mache animals also are popular. Unfortunately manufacturers do not separate their sales on the basis of materials, but real fur animals, being the most expensive, are the smallest sellers. One million dollars worth of children’s books are sold at this season through tie-up displays of storles with animal displays. ‘The newest outlet for stuffed animal sales here results from the discovery that dogs and cats like to pln{ ‘with toy animals. Many stores now have special departments where their customers may bring their pets to choose their toy counf . Other Noveltles. In making stuffed animals, they are cut from patterns like a dress. The head is put on a ball and socket so it can be moved up, down and around; the arms and legs are attached with screw joints. Some big animals con- tain elaborate spring arrangements. Paws are made of shaped leather and eyes from buttons. Some of the an- gora cats have hair made of real silk. Many toy horses and dogs have leather hides, which is merely glued on the framework. Miniature circus sets naturally are a big seller at this season. Then many doll departments have styles of dresses, sults and coats that parallel Eas styles for women. < Easter post cards sales this year may approximate 5,000,000. They are cheap- er than a year ago, more religious in sentiment, and not so fancy. Local candy manufacturers and job- bers report the last-minute rush for goods is exceeding expectations but they will have no trouble in filling late or- ders. Standard goods, not novelties, are selling. Easter, next to Christmas, is the biggest candy season, but most of the purchases are made late. (Copyright, 1933.) GOVERNMENT IN PLEA FOR CLOSED BANK FUNDS Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, April 13.—A petition claiming a priority and a preference tor certain Government funds on deposit in the Title Guarantee & Trust Co. was filed here in the receivership proceed- ings of the banking tution by United States District Attorney Simon E. Sobeloff, in the name of the United States of America. ‘The petition claimed that $4,207.83 in deposits and interests should be paid by the receiver for the trust company as a preferred claim under provisions of the United States code.
