Ord Preston, president of the Union frrust Co., received many congratula- tions yesterday on his first anniversary Bs head of the institution. He was elected president April 12, 1932, suc- leeding the late Edward J. Stellwagen, who served the bank in the same ca- pacity for over 30 years, as well as be: I ing the leading sprit in the organization of the trust company. Mr. Preston is probably best known to the Washington public as a former president of the Washington Gas Light Co. He was head of the gas company for many years and was one of the Jeading stockholders. He made a vigor- ous fight against outside interests secur- 3ng control of the company and re- signed when the major part of the stock did go into the hands of people cutside of Washington. Since then control has returned to the Capital, fol- jowing the firm action taken by the Public Utilities Commission. ~ All the New York and Chicago men who worked so hard to.get control of .the gas company at that time, are now out of the picture. Mr. Preston was a member of the Executive Committee of ths Union Trust Co. for a long time before he was made president. He has served as a director in the bank for more than 20 years, A public-spirited citizen, he has rendered much valuable service to the Church Orphanage Association, Visiting ‘Nurses’ Society, the Community Chest end other similar organizations. He belongs to several local clubs and is a graduate of Yale. Commercial Gives Out Statements. The Commercial National Bank lobby was a lively place today as depositors called for the statements showing how much they had in checking accounts at the time the bank suspended on Feb- yuary 27. Only those having commer- cial accounts were accommodated, but it is the receiver’s intention to have similar information ready for the sav- ings depositors in a short time. It was announced yesterday that the bank would be open today and that depositors might call for the statements. Canceled checks are being retained for the present. There was a rush at the opening that reminded one of “busi- ness as usual” Depositors knew in a general way from their check books how much money they had in the bank, but many cid not know how many of their last checks had been cashed. It was to obtain these figures that so many people went to the bank today. Not until after the savings depositers have received their statements, will claims against the bank be received. ‘The banking situation in the city ‘was unchanged today. A group of Pavk Savings Bank depositors are to have a meeting at the Mount Pleasant branch of the Public Library tonight to hear a report from a committee that was ap- Pointed to obtain as much information as possible on the bank’s financial condition. J. W, Thompson of 23155 Nineteenth street northwest is chair- man of the committee. The commit- tee members hope to have a statement to present from the conservator, Rich- ard Hargreaves. The shortage in the bank’s funds has been placed as high as $1,600,000, but this figure has never been confirmed. In this case, the posi- tion of the conservator is said to be practically the same as that of a re- ceiver, as there is no chance that the bank can be reopened. Active Trading on D. C. Exchange. Trading was active on the Wash- ington Stock Exchange today, starting off with $1,000 sale in Washington Gas 55, 1958, at 85%, and $2,000 at 86. Washington Gas 6s, series B, came out in a small sale at 103%. After cail, these 6s appeared on the board again in small lots, but selling at 103%;. Washington Railway & Electric pre- ferred stock came out at 81% and 48 shares of Mergenthaler _Linotype changed hands at 23, an advance of 3 points over the last previous sales. Potomac Electric Power 6 per cent pre- ferred moved in two very small sales 8t _108. It was announced from the rostrum that the local exchange would be closed tomorrow, Good Friday. This action is similar to that of the New York Btock Exchange. The unlisted bonds were called today, at is was the last session of the week. An asked price of 16} was placed on Mayflower Hotel 6s and 32 is now being 2sked for National Press Building first 514 Both bid and asked prices are fractionally higher on Washington Buburban 5!s. Financial District Comment. Nomination of a ticket to be named Bs delegates to the American Institute of Banking convention in Chicago in June, will take place at the rooms of ‘Washington Chapter, A. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 13.—A broad up- ward movement in the stock market today followed discussion of the pros- pect of inflationary legislation in Wash- ington. It was accelerated by acute | weakness in the dollar abroad, which in turn was founded on the same re- ~ | ports. |, The market had opened quiet but | fractionally higher and it did not really start its upward swing until around midday. Then buying orders poured in from all quarters, especially for the so-called commodity stocks. The pace | was so fast that the tape could not kecp .!up when the buyinz was at its height, although there were intervals of rela- tive inactivity. The foreign exchange market was almost disorderly. Sterling, which had opened unchanged. was up hetween 5 and 6 cents in the early afternoon Francs, which also had started in un- changed, were up over 4 points at the same time. The Belgian bill advanced 14 points and the Swiss, 23 points. A good many of these quotations were nominal, but of one thing there could be no doubt—Europe was again selling the dollar. One of the reports to which the foreigners seemed to attach significance was that Premier Bennett of Canada would join President Roosevelt in a plan to revalue gold in terms of the dollar. The resolution introduced into the Senate by Senator Bankhead, calling for a report on the possibilities of inflation, was another influence in all the markets. All the commodities advanced with stocks. Rubber was the leader at new highs, closely followed by sugar. Wheat, fractionally lower at the opening, was up 1% to 2Y; cents in the afternoon. with September selling above 63 cents. In the stock market favored issues were the steels, the metal shares gen- erally, stocks in which the short in- terest was over-extended, of which Al- lied Chemical was the best example; the rubbers, which were urgently bought in sympathy with the strength in the commodity; some of the rails, including Union Pacific; to a moderate degree the motors, and at times the utilities, al- though they were not as active as the res’:'h of the list. o e stock market quieted down in the fourth hour, as the dollar rallied abroad. Foreign currencies were still sharply up on the day, but they came down from their high points and simul- taneously the volume in the stock mntlz_fl ‘f;ll off. ly in the day the gold stocks were favored, but they wmgneglea.nd When the main move got under way. Mc-~ Intyre Porcupine declared the quarterly dividend of 25 cents a plus an extra of 121, cents and a bonus of 121, cents, all in American funds. MecIntyer advanced over a point. Homestake moved up 4 or 5 points about the same time, DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED NEW YORK, April 13 (#).— Reduced. 5 m"-‘!n“;mx. T s (P 3450 Q@ May 15 Pa)... d Extra, Am Dis Telof NJ.$15 .. Initial.
