Plans for a hearing with the District | Commissioners to protest against in- creased real estate assessments in the East section of the city were made last night by the Hillcrest Citizens' Asso- | ciation, meeting in the East Washing ton Heights Baptist Church. 1 The association recently sent a pet. tion containing a large number of sig- | atures to the city heads. in which it | was explained the increase in assess- ments ran as high as 450 per cent in one instance. Many property owners ! noted increases of from 200 to 300 per cent. ¥ The association contends the in- creases are not fair at this time, when | prices of real estate, as well as almost everything else, has fallen off greatly. In a campaign for improving their section, the members submitted a num- | ber of suggestions to District autho ties. The most important was either | to widen the Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge over thé Anacostia River or to Teplace the old bridge with a new one. ‘Another was to extend Branch avenue | southeast, from nden street south- east to intersect with the Southern | Maryland road. Other projects were | the grading of Texas avenue southeast, continuation of the sewer project known as Oxon Run and the laying of & sewer in Texas avenue southeast. Following _the business meeting a neighborhood quartet, known as the Hillcresters, entertained with a number of selections. Members of the quartet were C. L. Scott, R. H. Worrall. Ru- dolph Malth and Rev. G. B. Faucette. Miss Alvina Scott accompanied on the piano.
