ADDRESS (Requir [EDUCATION CHANGE CALLED VITAL NEED | Representative ~ Fletcher Tells Teachers and Students Demands of Modern Life. Educational methods which fail to fit the student to meet the changes of a civilization which is overturning all the old standards are costing not only the student, but all of society, tremendous losses, Representative Brooks Fleteher of Ohio told teachers and students of the Wilson Teachers College yesterday. The greatest problem facing mankind today, the Ohioan said, is to meet the demands of a changing environment. Through the sclences man has pro- duced more changes in his methods of living within the past 25 or 30 years than in any previous 2,500 or 3,000 years in history and every branch of human endeavor is facing the challenge of_unprecedented conditions, he said. Educators have been caught in the turmoil of the changing world, as has business, and educational methods are as out-of-date as the business methods which have dragged so many businesses to ‘ruln within -the past few years, Fletcher declared. The school = examination was de- nounced by Fletcher as unscientific and a waste of valuable time. Terror of examinations makes students neurotic and is the cause of some of the suicides of school children, he asserted. Children must be taught the scientific use of their minds and to study in terms of meanings and not of words, Mr. Fletcher said. They must be given confidence and ideals rather than edu- cational forms, he declared. EINSTEIN T;\KES CHAIR Scientist Will Be Attached Per- ‘manently With Madrid University.
