FINANCIAL STOCKS IRREGULAR AT SHORT SESSION 2 S_etbagrlé in Railroad List "Proves Unsettling Factor, Trading Light. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER. * Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, April 1.—The stock market began the new month in an / uncertain frame of mind today. The list tried to rally for a time, was then pulled down by a brief flurry of selling ir the rails, but stiffened in ‘the nnal dzlll‘n{! The close was irregular. Transfers for the two-hour session ap- proximated 450,000 shares. The setback in the rail shares was in. the face of a favorable weekly car- loadings report, and seemed to, be an aftermath of Missouri Pacific’s deci- sion to reorganize under the new Fed- eral bankruptcy law. Industrials, how- ever, held fairly well during the ses- sfon, and utilities were under very little pressure. Business Reports. ‘Week-end business reports, indicat- ing that a Spring pick‘up was finally under way in a number of lines, al- though from the extremely low levels. reached earlier in the month, were wiewed hopefully in Wall Street, but | traders were still inclined to take an extremely cautious attitude toward the market, for it was recognized that cor- porate earnings in the quarter just ended were for the most part highly unsatisfactory. Furthermore, there was a tendency to await further clarification ©f Washington plans on many vital economic subjects. A number of the industrials closed with gains of fractions to 1 point, in- cluding American Tobacco B, Case, cy, Continental Can, Drug, Gaaeral Motors, Goodyear, Llnett and Myers B, American Can, U. S. Steel and others. Such utility shares as Consolidated Gas and American Telephone closed frac- tionally higher, after temporary reces- siohs. In the rails, Now York Central recov- ered a point, after an extreme loss of 1%. Delaware & Hudson finished a couple of points lower. A loss of more than a point in Union Pacific was vir- tually regained. Northern Pacific fin- ished 1i5 points lower, and Louisville & Nllhville closed with a gain of like ex- An unusual transaction was the sale Wall Street had been inclined to ex- pect that the administration’s railroad program would be announced this week, and now expected it would certainly come next week, and would include pl.nm for a national co-ordinator. as- ted by regional ce co-ordinators, to unify ons and eliminate wasteful du- tion and competitive practices. vmn under such a plan are expected enofmous, which may result in -plneemm of much obsolete equip- as reported for the week tered concerns. OIL REGULATION PLAN OF PRESIDENT PRAISED Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 1.—The admin- istration’s plan for regulation of the oil ry will create $54,000,000 in new spending power for the oil farmer with- in a year and under it the major oil companies will have the courage to put many thousands to work drilling and out in the T. ILARGE EGG FUTURES TRADING IS NOTED —_——— | Chicago Market Has Been Actively Strong, Despite Recent Heavy Receipts—Production Gains. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, April 1.—The egg mar- ket these days offers a study in jig- saw economics for the analyst of com- modity price movements. Striet “laws” of supply and demand apparently have been overshadowed by traders’ convictions that improved pub- lic purchasing power is in prospect. The result has been a flood of specu- lative buying of futures in the face of huge receipts which promise peak holdings of nearly 9,000,000 cases of | storage eggs, compared with a top of 7,000,000 cases last year. 1 Loud expressions of confidence in the | future of the market are heard on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Ex- change as traders’ purchases keep fu- tures prices within scanty fractional range—under _conditions which nor- mally would find prices breaking daily by nearly a cent. In 10 principal storage cities today there were about 750,000 cases of eggs on hand, compared to 187,000 at this time last year. Reports to the Mer-/ cantile Exchange indicate Midwest EIB) production has béen running from 25 to 40 per cent ahead of last year’s, .while Pacific Coast output has been about 10 per cent under 1932 figures. But despite production reports and the surplus in storage eggs, heavy pur- chase of futures has continued—not by a few, but by many and widely scat- Futures prices have been running about 1 cent under last year's level at this season. 475.850.
