FINANCIAL GOVERNMENT BOND ISSUES ARE HIGHER Corporation Group Heavy and Foreign Dollar Loans Lower in Profit Taking. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 22—While United States Government bonds im- proved in the first half of today's ses- sion, the market for domestic corpora- tion issues was heavy and a majority of the foreign dollar loans guoted were lower. There was still an element of profit- taking to affect prices. In addition, several of the public utility bonds were influenced by poor earnings and by the increasing drive from many parts of the country for lower rates. The recovery in Treasury loans was limited to 1§ or }{ of a point and was too small to suggest any change in the trend of this group. *which had been under pressure for several days. The prospect of a large popular loan at an attractive rate of interest is one of the mgin factors in the day-to-day fluctua- tions. However, there is no certainty when this will be announced or on what basis it will be offered. Except for an isolated movement in | Interborough Rapid Transit issues, Which rose 115 to nearly 2 points, most of the active public utility bonds were lower. These included the Consolidated Gas of New York and American Tele- phone & Telegraph 5> and 5 per cemf bonds. In the iower grades there were losses in the International Telephone & Telegraph and Postal Telegraph loans on the poor earnings statements for 1932. Western Union obligations were also heavy. Columbia Gas & Electric 5s lost. a_point, as did American &| Foreign Power 5s. Detroit Edison issues have been slowly improving with the opening up of the Michigan bank- ing situation. ‘The weak spot in the industrial list was Shell Union Ol 5s, which declined 3 points. Fractional losses occurred in United Drug 5s, Texas Co. 5s and Stude- baker 6s, while Warner Bros, 6s were off | 112 points. In the speculative rails there were small declines on a limited amount of trading, with the Street waiting for some definite news concerning the much-talked-of plan of financial reor- ganization to be presented by the ad- ministration and the possibility of con- crete recommendations concerning rail- road consolidations. Following the reaction in Government bonds there has been a softer market this week for municipals, with no new financing of importance in sight. NEW YORK EGG PRICES . Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 22—After two hours of slow but steady recession to- day the Curb Exchange rallied. Failure of the decline to bring out offerings caused the reversal of trends. Electric Bond & Bhare yielded almost & point before turning about, Cities Tvice was steady. Standard Ol Indiana moved narrowly. Standard Oil of Nebraska touched a new low for the year. Niagara-Hudson Power was & trifie lower. ‘Trade developments were partly re- sponsible for the reactionary tone of the market in the forenoon. Along with a severe decline in dej t store sales in this territory during the first half of March, a reflection of the banking holiday, were such unfavorable developments as a decline in steel op- erations, a decrease in electrical con- sum| and a rise in gasoline stocks. The oils held well, in view of the ad- verse news about gasoline inventories and the fallure of California operators to agree on a 15-day holiday. This was not true, however, of the pipe lines. Eu- reka, for instance, sold off more than a point on a few trades. Natural Gas shares also sold down rather easily. Snapping out of the lethargy that characterized the group during the first two hours, gold mines shares spurted in the early afternoon, with Lake Shore mines leading the list. Food issues, how- ever did not reverse their early trend so abruptly. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea declined 4 points in the first several Parke-Davis was somewhat firmer. Expectations of better business in aluminum manufacturing circles at- tracted attention to Aluminum Co. of America common. New Jersey Zinc moved within a Tange of 1% points. Strongest of the senior power and light shares during this stage of the session was Utilities, Power & Light 7 per cent preferred, up more than 2 points, e S e CHICAGO DAIRY MARKET. - CHICAGO, March 22 (#).—Butter— Receipts, 6,172 tubs; market steady, prices unchanged. Eggs—Receipts, 18,- 279 cases; market steady; extra firsts, 13Y; fresh graded firsts, 13; current re- ceipts, 1115, Grain Market By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, March 22.—Downturns in | grain values early today accompanied unsettlement of securities. Continued disturbing effects of proposed agricul- ! tural legislation were also apparent,!| traders said. Opening unchanged to 3;-1; off, wheat afterward underwent a general setback. Corn started unchanged to 2 | and subsequently sagged all around. On the new breaks in wheat prices, the wheat market showed losses of 72 per cent of all gains scored since resumption of business after the bank holiday pe- riod. Thy losses totaled more than 51, cents w bushel. Dearth of buying, rather than pressure to sell, character- ized wheat trade. Possibilities of moisture in drought areas of domestic Winter wheat terri- tory Southwest were a handicap to friends of higher prices. Something of an offset was a statement by a leading crop authority that damage to Winter wheat in the Southwest would by no means be confined to acreage abandon- ed. He said much wheat in addition | was suffering both from shortage of soil | moisture and from aftermath of frosts, | and would show damage at heading-out time. Corn and oats weakened' with wheat. Provisions were responsive to declines in hog values and in grain.
