Thornton BEDTIME STORIES 7 5o Reddy’s Hope Is Realized. The jaulck to think. it auick to do. almost sure of winning through. —Peter Rabbit. HE truth is not always pleasant to listen to, but sometimes it is & good thing for one to hear. We may know it all the time, but to hear it expressed by some one elze makes us realize it s never before. | couldn’t. his breath while sitting back to him, 80 near that his tail was within reach, was Reddy Fox himself. A little way off was Jimmy Skunk after fat beetles and at the same time talking with Reddy. Peter could not help listening. So it was that he heard Jimmy Skunk’s opinion of him. It wasn't flattering, to say the least. Jimmy had spoken of him as a nice fellow but without much sense. How Peter did long to reply! But he There was Reddy Fox. Now just picture for yourself the situation in which Peter found himself. He was under a little bush, which, having no leaves, gave him very little protection from sharp eyes and none whatever from claws and teeth of an about | he THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Moreover, there wasn't & hole or hollow log or bramble-tangle near enough for him to reach in a race with Reddy Fox. Peter was in a fix, as they say, and he knew it. “If only Reddy doesn’t turn his head and look this way,” thought Peter. does I haven't even a wee, wee chance. Oh dear, what did I come here for? If only I had known that Reddy had returned to the Green Meadows I would have remained in the dear Old Briar Patch. I wish, oh, how I wish, I were there now! 1 wonder if I ever will see it again. If he turns what shall I do? What shall I do?” ¢ Jimmy Skunk had just said that Peter was likely to bob up any minute, and Reddy Fox had grinned and re- plied that he hoped he would. “Yes,” continued Reddy, “I would like nothing better than to have Peter bob up. It would sult me first rate. So far Peter has had all the luck. Séveral times I almost had him, only to have him escape by some lucky accident. But I'll get him yet. He has laughed at me & number of times, but he who laughs last laughs best, and I have a feeling that the last laugh is going to be mine. Yes, sir, I wish he would bob up right now. It would save me the bother of hunting for & dinner. I have a queer feeling that he isn't far away this very e sy v e Reddy turning his head. Hewulooklnxcnehmyafi about. Can you guess how Peter felt? His heart seemed to be right up in his throat as he watched Reddy’s head slowly turn. Slowly, slowly Reddy's head came around. A wee bit more of a turn and he would look straight into the bush and would see Peter. It seemed to Peter that he lived a life- time in just that wee, wee bit of time it took Reddy to turn his head. And ;:imnl Reddy was looking straight at im Peter saw surprise and recognition dawn in Reddy’s eyes. More than this, he didn’t wait to see. It was now or never! Cranberry Preserves. A very good preserve may be made from cranberries and honey which will remain in good condition for a long time. Take equal weights of cranber- rises in the honey and water until the skins are soft. Remove the ber- ries and boil down the sirup until just enough remains to cover the berries. Pour into glasses and cover as you .| would jelly. The appearance of the cranberries is improved if each one is pricked several es before cooking, and if the cooking is slow at first. This gives the sirup an opportunity to pene- trate the berries without destroying their form. A satisfactory methcd is lace all the ingredients in & double botler and heat them very slowly. this method is followed, the boiling down of the sirup is even more neces- sary than when the berries are cooked ‘more rapidly. Everyday Psychology BY DR. JESSE W. SPROWLS. Two Kinds of Food. ‘The average human being eats five pounds of food a day. The energy hid- den in four of these pounds is used up in digesting the remaining one pound. ‘The human machine is, after all, just slightly more efficient than s locomo- tive. Seven-eighths of the energy in the coal burned in its boiler is con- sumed in the friction of its working parts. Such is the story of physical food and its digesticn. A different story is told about mental food. It is not derived from things. It originates in the relative position of things. Its utilization is called per- ception. It may be described as the conscious of an in- dividual to his surroundings. The untt of this mental food is called an idea. ‘There are, it is estimated, 12,000,000,- 000 places in the brain where an idea may dwell. And these ideas have & way of combining and being made over into new mind-stuff. This process is called associatior And it is going on all the time, day and night, as long as we live. It is no exaggeration to say that each idea may combine with fifty other ideas. If each idea would com- bine with only two others, you would have more ideas than there are sands in the seas; more ideas than there are atoms of matter in the whole physical | universe; more ideas than you could | count from the beginning of time ta | the end of time, for you would be get« | ting & new idea every time you asso« ciated the last of the nth trillion with the one that had immediately pree ceded it. ‘The plain truth is that your mind is totally unable to digest its own food.
