Accompanied by his one-time law partner and other friends from his In- diana home, the body of Representative Will R, Wood, who died in New York yesterday, will leave Washington at 6 o'clock tonight for Lafayette, Ind., where he began his career. Roy Street, with whom the former chairman of the House Appropriations Committee practiced law before cov- ing to Congress 18 years ago, arrived here today to accompany the body back to Indiana, where it will be buried be- side that of Mrs. Wood. The Repre- sentative’s nearest relatives are two sis- ters, Mrs. Edward Morse of Oxford, Ind., and Mrs. Fred Chancellor, Stock- llnd. . Out of Office Three Days. The veteran of 40 political years had planned a Mediterranean cruise, and was to have sailed from New York yes- terday. Defeated in the November Democratic landslide, Representative Wood had been out of office but three days when he died. This afternoon the bédy lay in state at the Gawler funeral chnpel. 1754 Pennsylvania avenue. “Wood was my friend and I am deep- ly grieved,” said Representative Byrns of Tennessee, the Democratic leader, | | who succeeded the Indianan as Appro- tions Committee chairman. ‘He has left written into the pages of House history an enviable record, and | every member of the House who knew | him will miss him.” “He had been one of the most prom- inent of hard-working Republ\cans for 18 years in the House” said Repre- sentative Snell, the Republican leader. | “No one ever doubted his r!publ.\cnmfln He had the backbone to say ‘no’ as chairman of the Appropriations Com- mittee.” At Work at 8 A.M. Wood’s tall, spare figure and horn- rimmed glasses were familiar to all House members. As‘ chairman of the Appropriations Committee during two | Congresses he constantly was in the | lhlck of floor fights. Rarely could he be found in his office, for it was Wood's custom to handle his cormspmdencc from 6 to 8 am. and spend the rest of the day at committee work, on the House floor or at the various depart- ments, One of the last speeches he heard in the House was about himself. Repre- sentative Woodrum, Democrat, of Vir- ginia, praised him Friday as “that great | warrior who can reason with such un- | erring logic and such forceful eloquence | on every topic on which he might en-| | gage in debate except one—and that u | politics.” Deaths Reported Dreis. 83. 811 X st. ne Martin 5 Hausita Cornelin K.
