The loneliness theme came under dis- cussion. “It's strange,” June said, “‘bus I never realized that people could be lonely in a big city. It seems fantastic, doesn't t?"” “I've seen to much of it for it to have any novelty. Naturally, any one in a ho- tel, away from home, is Icnely, if he doesn’t know people. Life flows about these strangers, but they are shut out Jjust as surely as if there were bars be tween.” “Why don’t hotels do something about it? I should think, from a com- mercial standpoint, it would be profit- able. And it ought to create a Jot of good will.” “They do make an effort—some of them. The hotel hostess serves a good purpose in being the focus for social ac- tivities . . . helping club affairs, bridge parties and weddings.” “I never heard of a hotel hoste s—yes, I believe I have noticed ads for & school . . . Have you one here?" “No, but we are contemplating it. The Gilmore is new, as you know, and :ztut'*k- & little time to work things “You ought to do somet about the dinner hour. Have a mn.phu where guests of the hotel who are alone and lonely could meet and dine together. zlou could have your hostess introduce em.” “A sort of lonesome club, eh? It's an idea,” he mused. “It has its dangers— might cheapen the hotel. On the other hand, it has possibilities of real com- mercial value, especially in building up dining room trade—it would keep a lot of people in the hotel who otherwise go out to dine.” June sat up suddenly, her eyes glowing. “I've got a swell idea. Your grill downstairs. You have a good lunch crowd, but at dinner it's practically empty. And it’s such a lovely room-- Just the place for a dinner club.” “My dear, sherry agrees with you— makes you think. "Tell me some more. He refilled her glass. “Sherry, my ‘eye,” she laughed. “I was just thinking of how lonely I was sitting there in the lobby before I ran |into the excitement of saving a man from suicide. You'd be doing a lot of good in the world if you started some- thing like that—and save your guests from getting mixed up in scrapes, maybe, like Mr. Hart did that time—" “‘We'd more than likely get them into scrapes. But that isn't our responsi- bility. If we gave them the opportu- nity to enjoy a social hour it wouldn't be our fault if they carried it further, We'd have to keep a certain class of women out . . . but that would be easy. Do you know I think you've hit on something. That grill has been worrying us. We'd have to work out the details, of course. I'll get our pub- icity man to give it some thought. If it's a club, it ought to have a name, hadn't it?” “Of course. And I've got a simply grand name! Call it the ‘Between Six and Seven Club. That is the ghastly hour, you know. “That's good. It's eatchy, People would respond to it. Now, in case we do decide to put this over, we have to have a hostess—some one who's got a way with people—who can be friendly and sincere, without being fresh ami flip—some one who is young and beauti- ful and likes people—wants to help them and make them happy. You haven't any idea where I could get such & girl, have you?” “Why, no, I haven't. I don't know a soul in Newy York. If it were Rolla, I could easily find some one.” “Rolla must be a wonderful place, fhen. I know only one girl who an- swers my description, and I don't know it she’s available.” “Do you really know some one like that? How lovel “Yes. It's you! “You are joking!’ June was astounded; it had not oce curred to her that he could possibly mean her. “I mean it. What is so strange about it? I've been thinking for several days of sending you out on the question of acting as social hostess for the hotel. But I didn't know how you were fixed financially—whether you'd be inter- “But I would! I have an income—a small one—not enough to let me go on living here indefinitely, or even stay in New York unless I earmn something. And T want to stay here. But what would T have to do? Do you think I'd know how?' “I think I'd just as soon trust you as 3 professionally trained girl—you'll probably put more spontaneity into it, and friendliness—that's your long suit, I think. We'd put you on to the tech- nical tricks of the job, of course. And you'd be protected from discourtesies, 50 far as was in our power. I'll have to make a rule, though, that you don't be too sympathetic and invite pros- pective suicides to g June laughed heartil: going to do away with suicides got up. “I'll run along. I promised Mrs. Hart to go shopping with her to- think it over—especially the old club idea, and we’ll try to come to an agreement in a few days. This Bishop chap isn't likely to ralse any objections, is he? “Certainly not!" . “The investigation is slowing up a bit, isn't it? They're not getting ve far. I think the girl was murdere ;{er body will likely turn up some ay." Oh, don’t say that!” “There, I'm sorry I mentioned it. Good night—have a good rest, and if any more brilliant ideas crop up, hurry to my office.” “I will,” she promised, and went down to her rooms. She lay awake a long time, thinking over Linder's ten- tative offer. She had entertained so unreservedly in her father’s home that the prospect of handling the same sort of thing on a larger scale didn't appall her. Her mind was racing with ideas. They'd change the menu, too, if she had any influence. A whole list of dishes foreign to New York hotel cook- ing popped into her head, and she got up to write them down. LITTLE ROCK, Ark, March 8.— Some 250 unemployed persons are seek« ing homesteads in the hill country of Northern Arkansas and their presence has caused the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce to become incensed at the Sioux City, Iowa, chamber. ‘While most of the group roamed over the hills near Clinton today looking for a site for homes, D. Hodson Lewis, man- ager of the Little Rock Chamber of 1so Commerce, issued a statement saying the colonization project was “discour aged strongly” before it started. The colonists, most of whom are nearly destitute, said they were sent to Arkansas by the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce and were promised home- steads on Government land. RESORTS. ATLANTIC CITY, N.
