By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 6—The num- ber of physicians in country districts is declining “out of all proportion to losses in the population,” says a supplement to the report of the President’s Re- search Committee on Social Trends, but the reason is neither lack of field nor potential source of income. “The great increase in irregular prac- titioners proves the field and the income are there,” the supplement declares. “It would appear that large sections of rural America face either a break- down of medical service, a surrender of the fleld to irregulars, or socialized medicine, unless the medical profession, with or without aid from State and social agencies, can solve the problem.” Social Trends Surveyed. These nmflnzs are set forth in “Rural Social Trends,” by Edmund De S. Brun- ner, director of a series of town and country surveys for the Institute of Social and Religious Research, and J. H. Kolb, Frofauor of rural socmlogy College of Agriculture, University of ‘Wisconsin, “erquhr practitioners” the authors define as “so-called non-medical prac- titioners, such as osteopaths, chiroprac- tors and the like.” ‘The monograph reports also that the doctors in rural districts in 1930 were older than those in 1920 and older than city physicians. For instance, it says, in New York the country and village doctors were from eight to ten years older than those of the city. In Towa the differences were from four to ten years; in Washington, from two to six years. differences, the authors state, are im portant from the point of view of public health. Older Doctors Doubted. “Many physicians of middle or past middle age are not helpful, neither ad- vocating nor practicing modern methods of proven value,” they write, “and the first and perhaps most important step in public health is the education of the people in a way that will cause them to demand the things to which !hey are entitled. “This does not apply to the profes- slonal leaders who are in the very fore- front; but the large army is not prone | to follow promptly. “For instance, in diphtheria cam- | paigns the injections were at first op- | posed by the bulk of the doctors; nor was the profession as a whole largely | ser]‘ccenble in securing absolutely safe milk.” Veterinarians as well as doctors de- creased between 1920 and 1930, Brurer and Kolb find, but dentists seem to have held their own. while the number of nurses in the villages studied rose | 71 per cent.
