A combination of circumstances seems to be working to the end of| displacing the camel as the burden | bearer of the desert, and the result| is that thousands of these beasts are | running wild, having been turned loose | by their one-time owners who have not | further use for them. The animals have thrived and multiplied until the | country of Syria is overrun with them and the natives regard them as a pest. In some parts of the country the agri- cultural people are compelled to stand guard over their growing crops to pre- vent the droves of camels from de-| vouring the grain. The animals roam | far and wide in search of food, which has been very scarce, owing to the drought of the recent Summers. R T TODAY’S AMUSEMENTS. GARNER PLANS PLAIN GOWN AT BALL Costume to Be Worn Twice Will Thus Be Given Double His- torical Significance. By the Associated Press. ! “Just as plain and simple as I am” was the description Mrs. John N. Gar- ner gave today of the evening gown she will wear both to the White House next Tuesday night and to the inaugural ball March fourth. ‘The dress will have a double his- torical significance in that it will grace her final important official appearance in her role of Speaker’s wife, President Hoover’s dinner to the Speaker; and also her first social whirl in her new role of wife of the Vice President. Mrs. Garner, in the third of her mul- tiple character parts in the drama of public affairs, secretary to her hus- band, was packing for the move from the House to the Senate side of the Capitol as she described her dress. “It's black—satin, I think—anyhow we'll call it satin” she said, sinking into a chair for a little breathing spell. “It has a soft, lacy light collar that starts in the back about here (she in- dicated a point above the shoulder blades) and that comes forward on both sides to form a cowl-effect at the neck, going on down the front to a little V below the waistline. “The trimming isn't dead white, but light, and it is embroidered with s quins that give it a yellowish-gold 2ast Mrs, Garner said she hadn't yet se- | lected the gown she would wear on inauguration day for the ceremonies at the Capitol, but that it would certainly be some variation of her favorite “black $6 in April 18 $6 in May womg | OKAY RADIO CO. h touches of white.” New Spring Just Pay $6 in March EISEMAN’S 7¢h & F sts. C. Measures Next Session. Representative Mapes, Republican, of Michigan, who served as chairman of a special House committee which several years ago investigated fiscal relations between the Federal and District Gov- emnments, announced today he would sponsor in the next Congress the five bills which the House passed at the last session to increase the tax burden in the District. These bills, which are now pending in the Senate, would remove the 60-40 ratio of fiscal relations from substantive law, provide an income tax as a sub- | stitute for the present tax on intan- gibles, increase the gasoline tax from 2 to 4 cents a gallon, provide for an in- heritance tex, and place weight tax on motor vehicles. Mr. Mapes indicated he expects all five of these bills to die from inaction in the Senate at this session, but de- clared he hoped to get all of them enacted into law in the new Congress. There may be some modification in the new bills, Mr. Mapes said, because | he plans, before framing the new meas- ures, to make a study of the exhaustive reports prepared for the Senate District ‘Committee on each of these bills by the Federal Bureau of Efficiency. DEATH BULLETS TRACED OKLAHOMA CITY, February 18 (#). The bullets which killed Jessie and Zexia Griffith, sisters slain near Ton- kawa by a highwayman, December 28, 1930, were fired from the pistol which the State contends was that of Earl Quinn, former Missouri convict, C. M. Reber, ballistics expert, said last night. Reber, operative of State Bureau of Criminal Investigaiton, said he had completed microscopic tests of the bullets removed at an official autopsy yesterday.
