The House got ready today to go through the formality of electing Frank- lin D. Roosevelt next President of the United States. It adopted and sent to the Senate a concurrent resolution calling for the House and Senate to meet in joint ses- sion at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, to canvass the electoral votes. Not until these have been counted, and the result announced in joint session, will Mr. Roosevelt officially have been elected. In preparation for this joint session, electors chosen in all the States last November are to meet tomorrow to cast their ballots for President. Between now and February 8, official certifica- tions of their votes will be submitted to Congress. On February 8, with Vice President Curtis presiding, ‘under the resolution adopted today, the House and Senate will convene in the House chamber. Certified votes from the 48 States will be opened by the Vice President and counted by four tellers, two representing the House and two the Senate. When the tabulation is completed, Curtis will announce Mr. Roosevelt elected Presi- dent for the term beginning March 4 and John N. Garner, Speaker of the House, elected Vice President. The electors will not be required to come to the Capitol this year. A law passed in 1928 forbids paying their ex- penses it they do come. Registered mail takes the place of messengers or of trips by the electors. i Camels in Egypt are carrying loads weighing as high as 1,500 pounds. N Established 1900 SARDO & CO. By the Assoclated Press. ASUNCION, Paraguay, January 3. An official communique last night an- nounced that Paraguayan forces had abandoned Fort Corrales, in the Gran Chaco, because of the numerical su- periority of the Bolivians. The Bolivians were aided by artillery units in their attack on the fort, the communique said, and the Paraguayans resisted all day. Two hundred Bolivians were killed and many were wounded, the bulletin stated. Although Bolivian forces suc- ceeded in surrounding the fort, the Paraguayans, alded by reinforcements, broke through the circle and retreated in an orderly manner. The communique said the fighting continued near Fort Corrales and that there was no news from other sectors in’ the Gran Chaco. La Paz Reporis Victory. LA PAZ, Bolivia, January 3 (P).— The general staff last night issued a bulletin saying attacks by Paraguayan forces in the Gran Chaco had been repulsed by the Bolivians after a series of brilliant charges. The bulletin added that the enemy fled southeastward from the Duarte sector south of Aguarica and near Carrales, where the conflicts occurred. Deaths li;p;t;d Henrietta J.
