Ji A (ORE, Acting Archif L 3 HURCH CHAIRMEN LED BY BANKERS Survey Shows Board Mem- bership Made Up Largely of Economic Classes. By the Associated Press. NEW HAVEN, Conn., December 21, —The conclusion that Protestant church board of control are. on the whole, made up of the business and professional classes is reached by Dr. Jerome Davis of Yale University Di- ;;nlty School, as the result of a study Dr. Davis' findings are based study of 387 Protestant chureh boards of Control in all part of the country, anudu among a& dozen major denomina- His report of the results, the American Journal of Sociology, stated that “taking into consideration all board members in all classes of cities, the farmers and laborers of every description from postmen to carpenters make up less than one-fifth of board membership, yet they comprise over cone-half of our adult population.” No Change in Control, “It is possible” he continued, “thaf 3 t in the face of the existing occupational representation on church boards, all members should definitely be educated to believe that the minister must be given freedom to represent not alone his congregation, but the entire com- | munity and his own consclence, using | the highest intellige: Capable: igence of which he is “This would not mean that control would pass from the congregation. but | only that it would be far more difficult for a partisan class group to evict & minister for selfish class reasons.” Churches of Northern and Southern Methodists and Baptists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists. Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians and Lutherans were in- cltfl:w the study. g that more than 70 of church board members studkdp“ m' less than 37!, hours annually on thelr duties, Dr. Dlvh asks, “Is it not possi- ble that our church boards really are not sufficlently working bodies?” Few Members Are Women. He reports that on an average only 6 | per cent of the board members are women. As to education, 32 per cent had gone blished in | to elementary schools and 35 per cent to secondary schools, while 33 per cent had spent at least some time in higher mgnu}’lons r. Davis finds that “ | the "iotal number ‘of thelr Ciace on the | boards, the bankers are most favored with the chairmanship, the manufac- turers come second, and the farmers and lawyers are almost equally tied for third place.” “On the whole,” he says, “the mem- bership of the boards of churches stud- igd were made up overwhelmingly of | the favored economic classes. Except in the towns under 5,000, the great bulk of the population is not represented on the boards in proportion to its numbers in the community. “This may be due to the fact that the church today is largely a white= collar institution. Its boards of cone trol may reflect to some degree its membership. s WASHINGTONIAN OWNS COIN MADE IN 1722 Hired Man Unearths It at Port Royal While Laying Out Base Ball Field.
