December 10.— Over 270 miles of wind-swept mountain roads from Martinsburg, W. Va., a 4- year-old boy with a broken back trekked with his parents, a younger brother and sister, to reach Wheeling— and possible relief. Jimmy Lucas was injured in a fall down stairs and his father, Elmer Lucas, unemployed, had only a little meney for food and none for docior A brother of Mrs. Lucas lived in Col- lier, near Wheeling. He promised to help. So Mr. and Mrs. Lucas, Jimmy, Eddie, 3, and a 5-month-old baby girl, afted over the mountains. They came much of ‘the way on foot, although “lifts” by automobiles helped “every once in a while,” Lucas said. It took eight days to reach Wheeling, where the woman's brother, & miner promised to meet them. All were suf- fering from hunger and exposure—es- pecially Jimmy. But Mrs. Lucas’ brother wasn't here when they arrived. The Salvation Army gave relief and started a search uhich may locate the man. Meanwhile Jimmy is in a hospital, | receiving medical care he should have had days ago, 270 miles z\\ay ‘CAN’T DEBUNK’ GEN. LEE; EDITOR SAYS IN PRAISE By the Associated Press.
