SCHENECTADY, N. Y., November 25.—Dr. Irving Langmuir, second Amer- ican to win the Nobel prize in chem- istry, sails on the Bremen Tuesday for Stockholm, where he will receive from King Gustaf V the official award. The scientist, dressed in a neat busi- ness suit of dark blue, told of his plans for a Winter divided between business and pleasure. He is 51 years old, but doesn’t look over 40. “There is nothing very definite yet,” he said. “We will arrive at Stock- holm just in time for the presentation ceremonies December 10. After that we will visit Berlin, Vienna and other cities and then go to Switzerland in January for a month of Winter sports.” Accompanied by Family. He explained that the “we” referred to his wife and two children, Kenneth, 14, and Barbara, 12, who will accom- pany him. Dr. Langmuir's itinerery calls for visits with several European scientists, including the Danish physicist, Niels Bohr, winner of the Nobel prize in physics in 1922, “Sure, we're taking our skiis and skates along,” he said. “We all go in| for the Winter sports—the whole fam- | e ily. When we're at home in the Win-|Edwina Booth, Member of “Trader | ter we go skiing up in the Adirondacks slmost every week end.” For 30 years Dr. Langmutr has Yol- Jowed these sports almost as faithfully 8s he has stuck to his work in the big laboratories of the General Electric Co. here. He got his first taste of skiing in Germany in 1903, when he was a student at Gottengen. “In those days,” he said, “skiing was scarcely known in America and was not very popular in Europe. - I liked it and I've been keeping at it ever since.” He has long a familiar figure in most of the resorts in the Canadian ckies, the Adirondacks and the Cats- kills. The Alpine resorts will not be new to him either, for he has wintered in Switzerland four times in the past 10 years. “We were not planning a trip to Eu- rope this Winter,” he said, “but now that we're going we certainly can't come back without visiting Switzerland.” Cor. 7th & H St. RESERVE YOUR SELECTION ON A SMALL DEPOSIT GIRLS COAT SALE Sizes 2 to 6 Coat, Muff, Beret Choose from tan 89 or grey pile fabrics o Zwarmly interlined and lined. ACTRESS SERIOUSLY ILL; JUNGLE VISIiT BLAMED Horn"” Cast, Declared Victim of Sun and Insects. By the Associated Press. HOLLYWOOD, Calif.,, November 25. —Edwina Booth, motion picture actress who played in “Trader Horn,” the pic- ture of life in the African jungles, is seriously. ill, the victim of a complica- tion ‘of tropical disorders that kept her from pursuing her film career and that for a time puzzled medical specialists. Few of her friends knew until today that she had been ill for seven months. Mrs, Josephine Woodruff, mother of the actress, said her daughter is the victim of the rays of the equatorial sun and of poisonous insects of the jungles, where, flimsily clad, she made scenes for the jungle story. “We didn’t want any one to know of her illness for fear it might hurt her future,” her mother said. Chicago Exposition Is First to Be Supported Without Aid of Taxes. BY the Associated Press CHICAGO, November 25.—The fi- nancial structure of the Century of Progress differs basically from that of | its predecessor in 1893. It is the first international exposition to be privately | financed, unsupported hv taxes. Whereas the organi ion, promotion | and operation of the t: { Columbian Ex- | position was a matter of city, State,| Pederal and international concern, and | effected through subsidies from public treasuries, the Century of Progress is virtually autonomous. | The Century of Progress was organ- ized as ag Illinois corporation, non- profit making and with no capital stock. 1t derived its revenue from several main sources. Fair Legion Formed. First, a world fair legion was formed. ‘The public was invited to purchase .$5 certificates, exchangeable for 10 admis- | sions to the exposition. Thus $634,000 was raised. Second, memberships in the fair's as- sociation tere sold at fees of from $50 to $1,000. This brought in $272,000. ‘Third, $10,000,000 in gold notes were issued, secured by the requirement that | 40 per cent of all gate receipts be de- | posited with the bcard of trustees and by the guarantee of a group of individ- uals and corporations. Each guarantor agreed to obligate himself to the amount of this guarantee. From these private | pledges, the Century of Progress se- cured $13,000,000. The remaining 60 per cent of the gate receipts will be available for the payment of operating expenses of the exposition. Another source of revenue is through sale of exhibit space, of which $4,000,- 000 worth has already been sold or con- tracted for. Contracts for concessions have brought $3,000,000 the fair re- ceives & percentage of sionaires’ profits. The Federal Govern- ment has appropriated $1,000,000 for participation and separate’States smaller amounts. First Profitable Fair. OFFICERS HOPE OUTLAW WILL TRY TO VIEW BODY Pal of Charles (Pretty Boy) Floyd Slain in Attempted Robbery. Second Man Wounded. By the Associated Press. EARLSBORO, Okla., November 25.— Charles (Pretty Boy) Floyd, leader of an outlaw gang, today was still the will-o’-the-wisp he has been to Okla- homa officers for many months. In the last two days he has been re- ported numerous places, but has not yet visited the morgue, where the body of his robber pal, George Birdwell, slain ‘Wednesday in an attempted bank hold- up at the all-colored town of Boley, in which Floyd did not participate. = Of- ficers, recalling that he and Birdwell last Spring forced their way into an undertaking establishment to view the body of Birdwell's father, kept a close watch.
