B-13 LONDON MAY LOSE FAMOUS OLD GLUB Coconut Palm Lends Oid World Distinctiveness to Place Dating From 1746. LONDON (NANA)—The famous Cocoa Tree Club, which is in danger of closing down, or at any rate of moving from its premises in St. James street, is London’s second oldest club, and dates from 1746. The oldest is White's, dating from 1698. A large coconut palm stands in the middle of the smoking room, reaching from floor to ceiling, and there is & distinctive air of Old World, dignified comfort about the whole club, which is noted for its old prints, succulent beef~ steak puddings and venerable waiters, Addison and Gibbon were both mem- bers of the club, and the latter made the following entry about it in his diary for November 4, 1762: “ .. . That respectable body, of which T have the honor of being a member, affords every evening a sight truly English; 20, or perhaps 30, of the first men in the kingdom in point of fashion and fortune supping at little tables upon a bit of cold meat or & sandwich and drinking a glass of punch.” There was once much gambling in the club. This was commented on by Horace Walpole in 1780, when he wrote: “Within this week there has been & cast at hazard at the Cocoa Tree, the difference of which amounted to one hundred and fourscore thousand pounds.” . Rule No. 5 at the club now reads: “No dice or game of hazard or baccarat shall be permitted in the club.” (Copyright. 1932. by the North Ami Newspaver Alliance, Tne) o " 2 S i, Byrd Barque Goes to Fair.
