NEW YORK, July 11—Early gains | on the curb exchange were extended by midday teday. The rally, which was started by the covering of some smart ' professional shorts, was technical. | Over the week end news for the most part was unfavorable. In the utility group Electric Bond & a fraction along with American Light & Traction, Common- wealth Edison and Electric Bond & Share $6 preferred. Standard Oil of Indiana was a shade lower around mid- and so was Citles Service Favorable developments included the stepping up of cperations of the Clarks- burg, W. Va,, plant of Hazel-Atlas Glass Co., to the highest rate since 1921, and resumption of the assembly department of H. H. Franklin Manufacturing Co., which reported dealers stocks of auto- | mobiles have been depleted. Tung-Sol | Lamp Works omitted the 25-cent | quarterly common dividend but paid the | usual 7o-cent preferred. ‘The Baltimore City Council requested Consolidated Gas, Electric Light & Power Co., to make voluntary rate re- ductions. The stock did not sell during ! the forenoon, but it had lost more than a point last week in anticipation of such action. When directors meet July 12 they are expected to order payment | of the usual quarterly dividend. | Resumption of the rise in hog prices | again caused the bidding up of Swift l& Co. and Swift International. In {their respective groups the following | stocks made the best showing on the upside: Cables & Wireless preferred, Rubberoid Co., Montreal Light, Heart & Power, and Chesebrough manufactur- ing. Cables & Wireless stands to bene- " | fit from the prospective increase in the communications business as a result of the Lausanne Conference. British- ‘Tobacco was another issue that moved forward for a time for the |same reason. Ruberoid would benefit 3 !from any increase in farm purchasing | power. Marconi International Marine worked i slightly higher and Canadian Marconi | turned active following the bulge in | Cables & Wireless preferred. Stocks iof radio manufacturing companies, however, lagged. Cord Corporation and | Ford Motor Ltd. were the only active motors during the third hour. -~ Stand- ard Oil_of Kentucky opened up 3| points.
