CTA—14 wwx - DECLINE IN STORE | . SALES REPORTED April Figures Off 16.8 Per Cent From 1931—Capital Traction at 10. BY EDWARD C, STONE. i Detailed figures from the Federal Re- serve Bank of Richmond show that de- partment store sales in Washingion iny April lacked just 16.8 per cent from | being equal to the trade total in April, 1931. This was a better showing than for the whole fifth district, which was off 209 per cent in sales, botter than Baltimore, which was down 21.3 pcr cent and ahead of Richmond, which was 23 per cent under April salés a year 2go, 7 Wnsl%ington is also lucky in the show-1{ ing made in the first four months of 1932, being but 14.3 per cent under the like period in 1931, while the fifth dis- trict as a whole was down 17.6 per cent, Richmond off 17.9 per cent, Baltimore 19 per cent and a group of other cities 24.6 per cent. The Capital led all other Cities in the territory in the rate of stock turnover in April compared with business in April a vear ago, although Richmond had a better turnover com-= pared with the previous month cf March, 1932 ! Teday's report from the Reserve Bank | of Richmond, after noting that reteil sales in the entire area averaged 20.9 per cent less than in April. 1931, says that part of the decrease was probably| jue to the earlier date of Eastr this The report adds: tock of merchandise chinged very | little in the reporting stores duringi April, but at the end of the month averaged 13.1 per cent less in selling} value than stocks in the same stores on April 30, 1931. The stores turned their stocks .296 times in April and between January 1 and April 30, this year, stocks were turned an average of 1.127 times, e lower figure than 1.207 times stocks were turned in the first four months of 1931. Collections were slower in April, 1932, than in April, 1931, the reporting stores collecting 27.1 per cent of outstanding receivables last month in comparison with 28.8 per cent collected in April last year. All of the cities for which individual figures are available showed lower percentages for the current s34 263, 391, 881 FINANCIAL. 1932~ Stouk and Dividcnd Rate. Abitibl Par & Paper. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 27—The stock market, after pursuing a lelsurely lower course during the first four hours, slumped to a fresh low level for the | bear market in the closing hour today. Volume increased sharply on the de- cline. The fulcrum that disturbed the list was the reduction of the dividend on General Electric common from $1 an- | nually to 40 cents. Immediately large | blocks of General Electric were thrown | on the market and the price was forced | down an eighth between sales until a | new low was reached, nearly 3 points | under Thursday's closing price of 1215. | Westinghouse "was sold as actively, dropping to a net loss on the day of around 5 points. Developments in Washington Were not encouraging to those who be- lieve that a general sales tax is the way oout of the budgetary problem. Stocks opened irregularly. sold off, allied. and at noon were only slightly , |under the preceding close. Weakness « developed in Beechnut Packing, which » broke 6 points on moderate offerings. For the first quarter the company re- ported net for the common equivalent 0 $1.07. against $1.20 a share in the same 1931 period. The balance sheet '3 position as of March 31 was exception- » ally strong. Cash alone was more than . | four times all current liabilities, besides % | which there were United States Gov- * ernment bonds of a value more than three times all current debt. There is ¢| nothing so far as known in the com- pany’s financial condition to warrant the break in the stock. Presumably it was another case of liquidation without relerence to value. Two small sales of Capital Traction stock were recorded on the Washington Stock Exchange today at 10, the lowest | point this issue has ever reached. The! two sales were made at the opening of | the marekt and were for five shares| each. 5 | A great deal of Capital Traction stock was bought several years ago around $100 a share as a sound investment and | not a speculation. For a long time the | stock sold in the eighties and nincties. and at that time was one of the lead- ers on the local board, the vearly vol- ume of transactions reaching h:ghl ires. e aid that much of the stock| that cost $100 a share is still owned by the original buyers. The idea has| prevailed that there would be a merger | of the local street car lines and that the Capital Traction stockholders would profit by such a move.
