J., May § (#).— Bishops William F. McDowell of Wash- ington, D. C.; Willlam F. Anderson of Boston and €harles E. Locke of 8t. Paul, Minn., were officially retired today from active service by the General Confer- «nee of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Bishop McDowell, who was the senior bishop of the church, has been & bishop for 28 years, serving in Chi- cago and Washington Asks United Church. A plea for & unJLed American Meth- odism, with no “North” or “South,” came to the General Conference today from the Methodist Episcopal Church South. It was voiced by Bishop A. J. Moore of San Prancisco, general super- intendent of the Methodist Episcopal Church South on the Pacific Coast. Although the Episcopal elections will not take place for another week or 10 days, 7 names are mentioned by delegates of the Methodist General Cnference as the outstanding possibili- ties for new bishops. Opinion in well informed quarters is that the iscopacy Committee will recommend the election of three new bishops. Many delegates believe the three will be elected from the follow- ing list: Lewis O. Hartman, Boston; Jt M. M. Gray, Detroit; Loren jwards, Denver; J. Ralph Magee, M ] o Beattle; William E. Shaw, Peoria, Ill.; Albert E. Day and Ralph B. Urmy, both of Pittsburgh.
