HEAD “Dream of $40,000,000 College One- fourth Fulfilled When He Succumbs. By the Associated Press. DETROIT, April 27—Students and alumni of the University of Detroit today mourned Very Rev. John P. Mc- Nichols, 8. J., under whose administra- tion as president the university en- joyed its greatest development. When he assumed the presidency in 1921 the university was housed in a few downtown bulfv;lings. At his death, which came last night in St. Joseph's Hospital, Ann Arbor, the institution embraced 80 acres at the outskirts of the city and his dream of a $40,000,000 college plant had been one-fourth realized. Although a comparatively young man —he was only 57—Father McNichols' health broke several months ago under the strain of unremitting effort to develop the university into one of the Middle West's major educational in- stitutions. The immediate cause of death was a heart attack. Born in St. Louis, Mo., in 1875, he was graduated from St. Louis Uni- versity and St. Xavier University, Cincinnati. He was an instructor at St. Xavier for eight years before he was ordained In the priesthood, in 1906. In 1913 he went to Campion College, Prairfe du Chene, Wis. In 1915 he transferred to Marquette Uni- versity, Milwaukee, where he became | dean in 1919. He was the author of text books on fundamental English which are widely used. Frightened Man Runs 6 Miles. Graham Copley of Sheffield, Eng- land, was so frightened by the wreck- passenger that he ran 6 miles from the scene to his home. |{OPEN A CHARGE ACCOUNT Spring Suits, $19.50 EASY TERMS—NO EXTRA COST EISEMAN’S, 7th & F CHAMBERS Largest Undertakers 18 Assistants 2 Funeral Buildings 12 Cars Hearses & Ambulances 6 Parlors 3 Chapels Branch Parlor 517 11th St. S.E.
