FINANCIAL HIGH-GRADE BOND LIST GOES HIGHER General Trend of Market Ir- regular—Trading Volume Small. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 27.—United States Government issues, municipals and a few prime corporation bonds continued to advance today, but the general bond list was irregular. Trading turned dull as the session progressed. The market opened with a firm téne. ‘Wall Street had every reason to be- lieve that the Federal Reserve is ac- tively pushing its purchases of Treas- ury and Liberty issues and that the de- velopment of this policy will raise quo- tatibns for these loans. Nevertheless after an advance of about 10 average points in the active long-term Treas- uries and Liberties, many investors have turned their attention to muniei- pals which offer refuge from higher income taxes. New peak quotations prevailed today for high-grade munici- pals and dealers confessed a shortage of these descriptions. New Issues the amount of about $2,500,000 were quickly distributed today. The firmness in corporation bonds ‘was confined to that class of securities where the yield and its relation to the current money market quotations are the only factors making prices. Amer- jcan Telephone 5s and the other prime utiitty bonds were firm. High-grade rails such as Atchison General 4s and Union Pacific first 4s were up frac- tionally. 1In the industrials the best gains were in issues such as General Motors Acceptance 6s. Junior railroad issues were erratic. Great Northern 7s and Illinois Central 4%s were strong. But Nickel Plate 6s ‘were off 4 points at one time and there were smaller losses in Missouri-Pacific bs and Erie 5s. Among industrials, Mc- Kesson & Robbins 518 gains a point. Pure Oil 53¢ ran up 5 points. Youngs- town Sheet & Tube 5s and Sinclair Ofl 7s were lower. In the junior utilities International Telephone 5s and Western Union 5s were lower. United Light & Railways (Maine) first and refunding 5s, due June 1, 1932, ‘will be met at maturity, accarding to an announcement today. The bonds sold today at par. The company is prepared to meet the full maturity of $11,000,000 in cash, but is extending an exchange offer—limited to $5,000,000—to those who wish to continue their investment. ‘To this end, $5,000,000 of United Light & Power first lien and mortgage bonds, dated April 1, 1932, and maturing in 1937, are offered to holders of the ma- turing Light & Railway 5s. The new bonds carry a 7!2 per cent coupon. They are exchangeable par for par. MONEY MARKET. NEW YORK, April 27.—After a slight rally at the opening, the Curb Exchange | today slackened its pace and turned irregular. | ‘The usual market leader, Electric Bond & Share, was up slightly along with United Light & Power A and American Cities Power & Light A.| Cities Service around 4 was down a small fraction. At times American Gas & Electric was up a point. Public utilities were fairly firm until | noon, when the weekly electrical output | Teport came out showing adecrease of | 123 per cent. Thereafter the power and light shares showed a softer tone, but remained active. Gray Telephone Pay Station of Hart- ford, ordinarily an inactive issue, was turned over quickly today within a range of 21> points. Deere & Co. was up slightly following payment of 10 cents on the preferred, which heretofore had paid 35 cents, the declaration being | larger than anticipated. While discussions were being held | here on the Standard Ol of New Jersey- | Standard Ofl of Indiana plan, whereby | the latter would sell the foreign properties of Pan-American Petroleum to Jersey Standard, the oils were moderately active. Standard of Indiana in the last few sessions has moved up a point on the belief in some quarters | that a cash distribution to shareholders | may result from the sale of the foreign | Pan-American properties. The latter's Venezuela property, Lago Petroleum, to- day reported three months’ output of 9,936,157 barrels, a gain of 1,382,939 barrels, reflecting speeded production during March in preparation for an oil tariff in this country, Chain Belt Co. scaled its dividend for a third time within less than a year This time the rate was set at 20 cents quarterly against 25 cents previously and 62}, cents last November. This had been discounted marketwise. CHICAGO ST[JCK MARKET By the Associated Press.
