March 9 —Early strength followed by increased offerings and lirregularity characterized today's stock market The pause in the advance seemed to be due to doubts as to whether the moarket had not outdistanced business improvement. It was admitted that the financial situation was much better, but there was no such confidence about trade. The weekly summary of the iron and steel industry gave little en- couragement Rate of operations was up 1 point to 27 per cent of capacity, but there was still no important buying from the three major steel consuming groups, motor manufacturers, the rail- roads and building construction. Rail- road car loadings made a poor showing, which was not offset by the prediction that Pebruary earnings would reflect the benefit of wage reductions In contrast to this show of strength was the heaviness in standard stoks of the grade of American Telephone, American Can, United States Steel and General Electric.
