Shook, 54, of the Army Medical Corps, former assistant com- mandant of schools at Walter Reed Hospital here, was found dead in his room at the hospital Saturday night. An improvised noose of bed clothes was wrapped around his neck and one end tied to his bed. Col. Shook, who was transferred from Washington last October to be- come commandant of the Army-Navy Hospital at Hot Springs, Ark., had re- turned here last Friday for mental ob- servation. His body was discovered about 8:30 Saturday by an orderly. An Army board of investigation was ap- pointed. Col. Shook was a brother of W. B Shook of 1213 Gallatin street, He is survived also by his widow and two daughters. His widow was reported on her way here to make funeral arrange- ments. It was believed burial would be in Arlington National Cemetery. Born in Pennsylvania, Col. Shook was a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School in the class of 1899. He entered the Army in 1900 | and completed a course of study in the Army Medical School in 1904. MONITOR SURVIVOR DIES Former Slave, Who Served in Civil War Naval Battle, Succumbs. PUTNAM, Conn, March 7 (#).— Thomas L. Taylor, 85, who was born a slave and served as “powder monkey” on the ironciad Monitor in its historic engagement with the Confederate ves- sel Merrimac, died today. His deatn was indirectly due to & beating he received in Worcester, Mass., on Christmas night when two men rob- bed him of $90.
