PERMITS INCREASE Amount of Individual Projects Less Than in Same Month Last Year. Building permits issued by inspectors in 32 leading citles of the Fifth Federal Reserve district in January, 1932, num- ber 2,289, as compared with 1,930 per- mits issued in January, 1931, but the average amount of each permit issued last month was much less than the average in the same month last year. Total valuation figures for the per- mits issued in January this year, amounting to $2,975828, showed a de- cline of 36.2 per cent under permits totaling $4.664,855 issued in January, 1931, last month’s figure being the smallest total reported for any month in the past 10 years. All of the larger cities except Norfolk reported lower 1932 figures, but it is of interest to note that 12 of the 32 cities showed higher fig- ures last month. Contracts awarded in January for canstruction work in the Fifth Reserve district totaled $5,615,205, including ‘bogh urban and rural construction, com- pared with $21,534475 for contracts awarded in January, 1931, according to figures collected by the F. W Dodge Corporation Of the January, 1932, total, $2.745,005 represented contracts for residential types of construction, compared with $4,493,725 in contracts awarded for residential building in Jan- uary last year, a smaller amount this year but a much larger percentage of total awards. The report, made public yesterday by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, presents the following comparisons in January building operation valuations in 1932 and 1931: Total Valuation. 1932. 1931 $964,200 $1,354,920 17,871 8.175 19,629 11,855 20,425 3.116 182,365 101,832 450 21,840 75,668 31.580 1,020 15,610 2,515 5,253 4,470 45,631 3,550 Cities. Construction contracts in the 37 States east of the Rockies amounted to $70,564,900 during the first three weeks of February, according to F. W. Dodge Corporation. This period of 17 busi- ness days compared with $84,798,400 in construction contracts for the 25 busi- ness days which comprised the entire month of January. Non-residential building made up $27,832,800 of the $70,564,900; while residential building supplied $17,824,100 and public works and utilities provided $24.908,000. The Chicago district held the lead over the Metropolitan New York area during this three-week February period, which it had attained in the first two weeks of the month. The total of awards in the Chicago territory was $15.779,400, whereas $8,735,500 was the Metropolitan New York total. ‘The next largest territorial total was that shown by the Middle Atlantic ter- ritory, with $9,494,100 for the three weeks' period. A compilation of 25 cities which piled up the largest dollar valuations of new construction contracts during 1931 also has been made by Dodge statisti- cians. Based on actual construction contracts awarded, rather than on building permit totals, this study shows that New sYork City was first with SATURDAY, $435.387,600; Chicago second, with $94,529,800, and Boston third, with $60,981,600. Philadelphia followed next with $54,920,700, and then Cleveland, with $32,004.900. The District of Columbia total for 1931 was $30,821/649, on the basis of | building permit totals, which would place this city in sixth place in this group.
