BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The . NEW YORK, February 5.—Under a very moderate amount of selling, the stock market today experienced a rather sharp reaction. Railway shares weakened first, but they were soon followed in the downward movement by the industrials. Several reasons were assigned for the | reaction, none of them entirely con- vincing. Selling of the rails was sald to be connected with the announcement that the Pennsylvania Railroad would apply to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a loan in connection with its improvement program. That such a strong carrier as Pennsylvania should take this action was, at first thought, a shock to the Street: but the justification is, of course, the large amount of employment that would result Earnings Statements. second place traders made poor earnings statements railroads will make for January There is nothing new about. that phase of the outlook. It allowed nothing ro accrue from the benefits of the wage reduction. Another reason for the prevailing bearishness was the increase of $43,000.000 in circulation shown by the Federal Reserve weekly statement. DEFLATION CYCLE STILL IN PROGRESS Weekly Report of Federal Reserve Board Reveals Liguidation. BY CHAS. P. SHAEFFER, Associuted Press Business Wiiter. The weekly report of the Pederal Re- serve Board, outlining the condition of member banks, shows that accelerated deflation and Mquidation have been going on for some months. These figures reflect continuation of the movement which had carried de- posits off $2,315.000.000 from-the end of eptember to the middle of December, while loans and investments during the same period decreased $1.373.000,000. Reports reaching the board indicate | that deserving customers in large money | centers of the country have little or no trouble in securing credit, but a differ- ent story is told by many rural banks| serving towns and small cities. In these, 1t is said, there are many instances of entire communities severed from all banking _connections, and forced to conduct business either on the basis of cash or with banks at distant points In other communities it is said that the deposit lines have shrunk to such | proportions that bankers have very littl cash for the purpose of credit and are devoting their attention to collecting overdue loans rather than making new | igations. i The reports issued each week by the | Reserve Board indicate the present sit- | uation has arisen only since last Sep- tember. Total loans and investments declined but itly less than $700,- 000,000 from October 1929, to Septem- ber 30, 1931, while total deposits during | the same period advanced $21.000.000 An increase 3y r-| rt purposes, | rawals from banks { to meet the impe holiday tr quirements, are said to be ma) | tributing factors to the downward ten- dencies in these two items Washington Produce| | jButter—One-pound prints, 26; tub, 2 Eggs—Hennery, | ceipts, 16a17 Poultry, alive—Turkeys, old toms, 1 |18; young toms and hens, 20a2 | chickens, 3 pounds and over, 16a18; 2| |to 21, pounds. 18a20; broilers. 1'y to 2 pounds, 18; hens, large, 16al7; smal 12al4; Leghorn hens, 11; roosters, 10; keats, young, 45a50; old, 25a35.
