B Branding as only a temporary ex- pediency the appropriation of $2,00 000,000 to set up the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, John Janney, chairman of the Executve Board of the American_Soclety of Practical Econo- mists, before a Special Committee of House members created to undertake formulation of plans for stabilization of silver, today advocated the creation of a $1,000,000,000 international bank to buy up and stabilize silver. By stabilizing silver and making it the basis for issuance of paper cur- rency on the same basis as gold cur- rency, Janney told tbe committee, the United States can not only open the way to complete financial recovery at home, but abroad as well. He presented to the committee, which |15 headed by Representative Arentz of {Nevada, and composed of members of Congress from the silver producing States, a plan for the creation of the international bank and for the pur- chase of vast quantities of silver. Buying on a rising market, tbe In- { ternational bank would be able, Jan- ney said, to lay aside a silver reserve greater in actual value than the amount expended for it. $37,010 TAXESTO U. S. Russian Trading Corporation Loses Appeal to Exempt $264,897 Paid Abroad. By the Assoclated Press. ‘The Amtorg Trading Corporation, official commercial representative of the Russian government, will have to pay an additional $37,010 into the Fed- eral Treasury as income tax for 1924 and 1925. ‘This was ruled yesterday by the Board of Tax Appeals, which held the cor- poration would have to pay a deficiency assessment on $264,897 it had deducted as taxes pald to the Russian govern- ment, The money, the board said, was paid to the Russian People’s Commissariat of Foreign Trade for the privilege of importing and exporting goods from the Soviet Republic and not to the government as taxes. The Amtorg claimed that if the money was not paid”as taxes, it was a necessary business expense. The board overruled this contention also, saying there was nothing in the evidence to | support such an argument. SIX HELD FOR PROBE OF “NUMBERS RACKET” Arrests and Seizure of Parapher- nalia Follow Raid on Alleged Resort by Police Vice Squad. Six persons were arrested and $75 in cash and a quantity of alleged gaming | paraphernalia was seized in a “num- 1bers racket” raid on a house in the 1800 block of Eighth street by the po- lice vice squad yesterday. Sadie Rogers, 30, of the 1800 block of Eighth street; Willlam Edwards, 56, first block of Myrtle street northeast; S. O. Murray, 26, of the 1500 block of Thirteenth street, all colored, were charged with permitting gaming. E. L. Miles, 37, of the 1900 block of Eighth street; Sadie Jones, 55, of the 1400 block of Tenth street; Bertha Rush, 24, of the 1200 block of Sixth street, and J. H. Evans, 21, of the 1700 block of Seventh street, all colored, were held as witnesses. Several large boxes containing num- bers slips were seized. Police merely opened the door of the house, walked in and presented a search warrant. TALKIE FUND GROWS Home for Incurables Now Has $824 of Needed $1,100 Total. Mounting steadily, the Home for In- curables’ fund for the purchase of new sound picture equipment now is $824, less than $300 short of the low bid of $1,100. Requests that every theater-goer con- tribute the price of one admission to- ward the talking picture machine has met the instant response of the public and the home expects to have the total fund in hand shortly. ‘The home decided to buy talking pic- ture equipment when it found it could no longer buy silent films. Motion pic- tures are the chief source of entertain- ment for the shut-ins at the home. SQUIRRELS GET UNRULY Park Police Study Problem of Keeping Them Out of Home. ‘The United States Park Police are confronted with the problem of how to keep the squirrels out of a house of a resident near Rock Creek Park. Mrs. A. Heiss of the 3000 block of Newark street, who lives near Rock Creek Park, complained to No. 8 police precinct that the squirrels were “over- running the house.” She claimed that the small animals “would climb over the roof, get in the gutters and even come in the house.” Officer M. K Raspberry of the U S Park Police, to whom the complaint was referred late yesterday, Informed his superiors at Park Police headquarters that Mrs Heiss contends that she runs the squirrels out, but “it doesn't seem to do much good” The officer observes that she would “like something to be done about it.” The Park Police are arranging a con- ference with the parks division of the Office of Public Buildings and Public Parks in an effort to seek a solution. OUR SEMI-ANNUAL P Lia Hard to Keep Up With the Joneses In Traffic Court Five Answer to Name When Called; Jesse James Is There, Too. The Joneses came into the limelight in Traffic Court yesterday, Where it was found that of eight people in the court lock-up five answered to that name, They were all arrested for offenses ranging from illegal parking to reckless driving and no permit. None of the group was related to any of the others. When Clerk Addison upon receiving the first arraignment paper shouted out the name “Jones,” most of the entire group behind the bars got up and started to walk out for trial. Also numbered among the traffic de- fendants was Jesse James. He was arrested by ninth precinct police for specding on Bladensburg road north- east yesterday. However, he was & colored amublance driver. Judge Isaac R. Hitt gave him a suspended sentence. TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS.
