Visitors Cordially Invited Famous Church es of the World The Taj Mahal—the Glory of Agra “ POEM in architecture” is the manner in which has been de- scribed the wonderful mausoleum built by the Emperor Shah Jahan in India's ancient city of Agra to hallow the re- mains of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and where he himself lies buried. ‘ Fashioned throughout of white mar- | ble, the structure is crowned by a great white dome in the center with a smaller dome at each of the four cor- ners. A marble terrace surrounds the | building and from this rise four min- | arets, one at each corner. Modeled | and painted more often than any other | building in the world; described in song and story, it is, indeed, “a dream in _marble.” The building is an early example of the system of inlaying with precious stones characteristic of the structures of the moguls after the death of Akbar. All the spandrils of the Taj, its angles and important - architectural detalls, are inlaid with agates, bloodstones, jaspers, and the like. These are com-| bined in wreaths, scrolls and frets ex- quisite in design and delicate in coloring. This delicate work is lavishly be- stowed upon the tombs themselves and the screens which surround them. More sparingly it is introduced into | the masque, which forms one wing of the Taj, and on the fountains and the surrounding buildings. The Taj was designed by Ustad Isa. He is described by some as a Byzan- tine Turk and by other authorities as a native of Shiraz in Persia. He un- dertook the commission at the com- mand of the emperor, Who mourned his beloved Mumtaz Mahal and wished to commemorate her many virtues by a structure as delicate and perfect as had been her body and devotion. The pletra dura work belongs to the Per- sian school; and the sometimes ad- vanced theory that it was the work of a Frenchman, Austin de Boudeaux, in the employ of Shah Jahan prob- ably is incorrect. The ancient city of Agra, where this monument stands, is famed itself in the tales of the mysterious East. It was & famous frontier fortress in the ancient days, and there the Afgan rulers from the mountains held their sway. When the city was captured by the Emperor Baber in 1526, the fa- mous Koh-i-noor diamond was part of the loot. Augusta Jane Evans introduced a replica of the Taj Mahal in her novel of years ago, “St. Elmo,” while the |late” Sir Conan Doyle laid a part of “The Sign of the Four” in the fortress of Agra during an Indian uprising.
