S. FORESTRY EXPERT 1and DIES AT HOME HERE Funeral for Hofer 8. Meekham, Who Made Valuable Maps, Will Be Held This Afternoon. Hofer S. Meekham, civil engineer and for a number of years map compiler and draftsman in the Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, died Wed- nesday morning at his home, 7715 Alaska avenue. He had been in ill health for the past six months. Mr. Meekham entered the Govern- ment service June 29, 1900, and served continuously until his retirement, April 30, 1931. His knowledge of surveying and drafting, coupled with years of field work in the national forest ranges reservations, made his services valuable in the compilation of maps used in the Forest Service. He was a member of the rishville Lodge, F. A. A. M., of New York Surviving are two daughters, Miss Sadie Meekham and Mrs. Paul E.| Schmidt, with whom he lived, and a brother, Ernest C. Gibson, jr., Gary in- dustrial chemist, was still in jail here today while his wife and daughter, whom he is charged with murdering, were being buried at West Apollo, Pa. Pending grand jury action, officials refused to release the prisoner, al- though a coroner’s jury returned a verdict that unknown persons were re- sponsible for the fatal shooting last Saturday night of Mrs. Gibson and the daughter Margaret, 7. EX-WATER CHIEF FOR DISTRICT DIES John S. Garland S:ccumbs After Long lilness at Home Here. John Spottswood Garland, former su- perintendent of the District Water De- partment, died at his home, 1320 Twenty-first street, yesterday. He had been in ill health for a long time. Mr. Garland was born April 15, 1859, in Washington, D. C., and was educated in its public schools and in the Mary- land Agricultural College. He attended the Naval Academy for a while, but re- signed because of poor eyesight. He went into the employment of the Rich- mond & Danville Railroad, for whom he built a bridge across the Yadkin River near Winston in North Carolina. Started Service in 1891, ! On November 1, 1891, he became an assistant engineer in the District Sur- face Division and on April 24, 1893, he was made permit clerk of the Engineer- X;gneDeplrtrr‘negl. In December of the E year he became assistant engineer in the Water Department. He was pro- moted to engineer July 21, 1914, and on the death of the then superintendent, Walter McFarland, he was made super- intendent March 26, 1915. Early in 1920 Mr. Garland was granted an extension of two years on his retirement, but shortly after that his health failed, and he was retired November 1, 1929, Mr. Garland married Margaret Heap. Two daughters of the marriage survive, Mrs. William Hill, wife of William Hill of Hill-Tibbets, local firm of au- tomobile dealers, an Mrs. George Ed- wards of Stepney, Conn. Rites Set for Tomorrow. Mr. Garland was a member of the Oldest Inhabitants’ Association and of the Washington Society of Engineers. Funeral services will be held at St. Alban’s Church at 11 o'clock tomorrow. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Garland was a great-grandson of Commodore Thomas Truxton, U. 8. N, and a grandson of Gen. John Gar- land, U. 5. A. His father was a cap- tain in the U. S. Two bandits held up James Lompro- poulos, night manager of the Post Of- fice Lunch Room, 727 North Capitol street, early this morning and robbed the cash register in the lunch room of about $50, Lompropoulos reported to police. He said the two were loitering about the place for some time before the robbery and one of them suddenly drew a pistol, while the place was de- serted.
