HUGHES. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, December 28.—Busi- ness was resumed today on the Stock Exchange, after the triple holiday, with the downward trend still in evidence. Stocks sagged on small volume largely because of tax selling, the time for which is becoming short, but partly be- cause of further liquidation There were one or two items of en- couraging news over the week end af- fecting particular corporations, but the general situation showed mo change. Granting of higher commutation rates to the Lackawanna road was hailed as significant of a changed attitude toward | the railways on the part of the regu- lating authorities. Lackawanna was one of the few stocks to sell higher, showing & 3 to 4 point gain during the early trading. In general, the railway shares made a better showing than the industrials or the utilities, although there were weak spots in the rails, one of which was Baltimore & Ohio. New Lows Recorded. Elsewhere in the list a number of important new lows were recorded. One was American Telephone & Telegraph, | under 113 for the first time. Another | was Westinghou Electric, under 23, where it was discounting unfavorable dividend action. Still another was Con- solidated Gas on which traders seem | to have turned bearish without any particular reason. United States Steel, American Can, Allled Chemical and General Electric were all heavy. East- man Kodak made a new low before noon, off almost & points from Thurs- day's close. The market was thin on both sides. Had there been any important buyin orders could not have been filled ex- cept at substantial advances. There was, however, no effective demand. Banking interests were said to be tak- ing stocks on a scale down, but that| sort of buying does not show for a long time. For a time General Baking advanced against the trend. The low price of flour has helped the baking companies and an officer of General Baking was recently quoted as saying that his com- pany would add $800,000 to surplus this year after all dividends. Other food stocks reacted Corn Products and Shattuck were two instances. Except for the Allied Chemical meet- ing Tuesday, the market has no im- portant dividend dates to trouble it. Allied Chemical is said to be earning the full $6 rate, but the price of the stock would indicate there was some doubt about its maintenance. However, in this market stocks fell off regardless of prospects. Call money renewed at 3 per cent and was in moderate supply at that rate, with some calling of loans. Opening Prices Irregular. Price trends were mixed at the open- £ The rails were one of the few groups that displayed & fairly uniform up- ward tendency. Norfolk & Western opened up 2 points at 117. Chicago & Northwestern was up % at 6s. New York Central rose 13 to 29 Over-the-holiday _developments in- cluded a new low recorded by weekly commodity price averages, & drop of 24 cents in sterling here to $3.41%, and | the announcement of numerous epecific steel construction projects. United States Steel cpened at 37%, oft 4. Bethlehem Steel at 18 declined Vs point to a new low. General Elec- tric gained 14 to 24%. Most of the food stocks, such as National Biscuit at 39's, National Dairy Products at 227, and Standard Brands at 12Y, were fractionally lower. American Can at 61% was unchanged, as was J. L Case at 40. General Motors lost s at 321y and Auburn Auto was down 1 at 1203, American Telephone declined % to 1143, Consolidated Gas rose % to 60. International Telephone was up 1, at 83, but North American was oft 1, at 32';. Reynolds Tobacco B dropped 'z to 33 and Standard Ol of California decreased 35 to 23%. CHICAGO DAIRY MARKET.
