It was one of the first three missions established when the famous Serra be- gan his work in the territory then be- longing to Spain. San Buenaventura and San Carlos were the other two. San Diego was foundéd in 1769, and three years later, because of the fact that food was scarce and hardships many, it was all but abandoned. The site was well chosen. Within a radius of 10 leagues no less than 11| rancheries were located. But the peo- ple were inhospitable. They offered no ds, fish and rabbits constituted menu, and so, at last, Padre Crespi went up from San Carlos with 22 mules loaded with 15 one-half loads of flour. A year later a new building was added, a well was dug and | crops were growing. In October of that year 60 Indian converts were baptized. A few days later two of them fled and spread an | insurrection, which came to a head in November when 800 naked savages stole | down on the defenseless mission by night. Jayme and Fuster, the two padres; two boys, a blacksmith, a car- penter,” four soldiers, made up the resi- dents. The little band was awakened in early morning after the place had been ran- sacked and the building fired. Jayme, going out to meet the force, was beate to death and his corpse filled with ar- rows. The other padre and his com- panions sought the guard house. The | ptacksmith fell on the way, but the re- mainder held the fort and fought bravely back until the enemy fled at daylight. Neophytes, who were unharmed be- cause they were Indians, came to their ald, and the guard from the presidio, which had slept peacefully the night, was notified. In 1803 an earthquake destroyed the mission. A new building was erected and completed in 1813. When Spain ceded the country to Mexico, Echean- dea, the first governor, made his home here. Today the place is a ruin. Only the fachada of the church remains. Some of the walls stand, and bits of adobe hedge the garden and orchard, and the | remains of the old well can be seen But nearby is a new brick church, speaking of the modern life which has succeeded the old.
