WASHINGTO! | Johns, Newfoundland, and with impr WORLD HOOK-UP 10 HONOR MARGONI Observation Today to Mark First Ocean Message 30 Years Ago. “Marconi day,” marking the thirtieth anniversary of the first successful radio transmission across the sea, will be fit- tingly commemorated today with the largest international radio hook-up ever attempted. A radio roll call around the world, in which 16 countries and insular possessions will participate, has been arranged by tbe National Broad- casting Co. to pay tribute to the noted Ttalian inventor, Gug'ielmo Marconi. Leaders Join In Program. Personalities high in the world's radio affairs will join in the event as the two and one-half hour program is switched from one continent to another through the ether. Beginning at 4 p.m., Eastern standard time, the program will be broadcast through the N. B. C. coast-to-coast combined networks and by short waves to listeners in virtually every corner of the globe. N. B. C. es- timates that programs from the points in the hook-up will travel a total of more than 70,000 miles before reaching some of the listeners in this country. Exactly 30 years ago Marcon] succes: fully spanned the Atlantic through the air with the Morse code letter “S,” in- terpreted by three dots. Then 27 years old, Marconi sat_in Cabot Tower in St. vised earphones picked up the signal, which had originated in his station | at Poldhu, England Cleared Way for Radio. That feat was the genesis of radio as it is kndwn today, including broad- casting. It demonstrated to a skeptical universe that it was possible to trans- | mit intelligence without wires and that | there were invisible roadways in the skies In the event today, Marcon! will wit- ness what the genius of man has ac- complished with his original contribu- tion as the nucleus. From New York the program will be switched to Lon- don and thence back to Washington, to Berlin, Warsaw, Madrid, Ottawa, Hono- lulu, New York, Tokio, Caracas, Ma- nila, Brussels, Sydney, Paris and back to New York. All this will be accom- plished, meteorological conditions per- mitting. as if it occurred in the same room. Music typical of the various na- tions on the five continents will be in- terspersed. ‘The program will be opened by M. H. Aylesworth, National Broadcasting Co. president, who will introduce David Sarnoff, president of Radie Corporation of America, and close personal friend of Marconi. ~ Mr. Sarnoff will start the radio roll call, first signaling Marcont himself at London. Sir John Reith, head of the British Broadcasting Cor- poration. also will address the world- wide audience from London Many Nations Included. Switched back to Washington, Gen Charles McK. Saltzman, chairman of the Pederal Radio Commission, will ex- press the thanks and gratitude of the American people to the Italian inven- tor; Hans Bredow, commissioner gen- eral of German radio, will speak from CIRCULARS PROHIBITED. In order to protect its adver- tisers from receiving circular matter, it is expressly under- stood and agreed that all such i matter will be withheld as far as possible by The Star. Only Ibona fide answers to advertise- ments addressed to box numbers in care of The Star will be de- livered to advertisers on pres- entation of the box number ticket. B HELP—MEN ages 12 16.
