OMETHING new” in the [ presentation of _religious drama was offered yester- day afternoon at National Christian Church, where the Housman Yuletide miracle play “Bethlehem” was offered by players of the city to a crowded auditorium. The play was read in ecclesiastical manner, the players wearing flowing black robes, seated at tables, lighted only by lamps. In this beauty of the theme, the telling the story, and the music that accompanied the reading, were brought out most impressively. The service was conducted by Rev W. L. Darby, acting for Rev. Earle Wilfley, D. D., who was unable to be present, and prior to the reading of the play special music was con- ducted by the c of the church, Accompanied with harp music played by Katherine Riggs, the play- ers took their places in the darkness, and then, quietly and impressively, read the three scenes into which the play is divided—the scene of the shepherds, the kings and the manger The parts were all well and sin- cerely read by a group of 14, who had been rehearsed by Alice Coyle Torbert of the Committee on Reli- gious Drama_and Pageantry of the Washington Federation of Churches. The readers were Caroline M- Kinley, Elizabeth Gatlin Pritchard, Alleen’ Sanford, Jarvis, Thomas Cahill, Harty Schonrank, Ernest Ropes, Tench T. Marye, He man_ Riess, Howard Weirum, jr Stanley Mattern, Richard Rush, Rev Elmore Turner and Rev. H. A. Kes- ter. The harp music added greatly to the spiritual quality of the presen- tation, which is said to mark a new step in religious drama in Wash- ington. master of the art of producing a show of proportions. Not content that it be merely above par value, he went out of his way this time to offer new head- liners as well as those old in fame. Among them are Nadja, & Russian girl_of exotic charms; Mike Casey, a “find” of several months ago, and with a “gold, voice, and Slim Lancaster, Washington's own heavy hoofer A different brand of humor is offered by Hap Fryer, Lake’s big bid for the mirthmakers' crown. Hap presents an original and smooth form of fun without the affectation that usually trails the burlesque humormaker. And Al Ferris comes a close second to Hap. Together the pair are hard to beat in any man's try. The necessary foils for the “funny men” are Gus Edwards and Bobby Birch. Nadja has few equals when she steps out in song and modern- istic dancing. Boots Rush, Gabby Fields and Doris Birmingham also contribute to the feminine setting and unusual steps and novel cos- tumes merge well with the personali- ties of Joe and Ernestine. Too much credit cannot be given the chorus. They rank with the best seen anywhere in town this year. Jimmie Lake’s creation is a real hit show this season.
