Artistry of the Lunts Shown in “The Guardsman.” HIEF among the luminaries who ;nee the boards of the Guild theater in New York are Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, who have done much during the past week at the National to make one believe that the art of the theater is not chant- be deft and de- lightful. Although Mr. Lunt has assured us that he is nothing but an “amateur” as far as the screen is concerned, if this is an example of amateurism, then Queen Dido never died, nor did Mae West reach out and pluck “Macbeth” for her next starry ven- ture. An actor whose comedy modu- lations are wonderfully amusing, he may be viewed with the utmost saf in this lovelorn lovers’ role. Miss Fontanne, too, as always, is past tion—being the quintes- sence 6f & handsome, capable come- dienne. In fact, there is nothing to roll out of your seat with excite- m{.m;ut it is “different,” sophisti- cated and to be enjoyed hugely as a ridiculously pleasant trifle. s E. deS. MELCHER. William Haines At Loew’s Palace. 'HE new, or further, or whatever they are “Adventures of Get- Rich-Quick Wallingford,” combin- ing the services of Willlam Haines ! and Jimmy (Schnozzle) Durante are full of “just what the public wants.” Plenty of laughter, plenty of tom- foolery, and never, as has been said, a dull moment, there should be am- ple evidence that this is a satis- factory comedy picture—which 1s no time either tortures the emotions or gets one in any way down at the mouth. Much rejoicing, too, is going on at Loew's Palace since the appear- ance “in person” of Mr. Haines has necgssitated the calling out almost of the police squad, so ardent are his admirers and so anxious to view him at arm’s or eye's length. Mr. Haines is, unfcrtunately, not as versatile on the stage as he is in the picture (it's his best film since Lord knows when). He smiles nicely, and his audience roars its approval of him—but why do all amusing luminaries that come from the West have to do a little verse, a little song, and, worst of all, a lit- tle dance? Mr. Haines is a capable actor, and above all, an exception- ally ebullient personality as his screen self, and the sight of him " imitating a musical comedy lothario 1s nothing short of tragic. It seems as though they could have done better by him. He smiles through it all, however, and pretends to like it—but when they told him “go on, you've got to do a dance— that’s what all good audiences expect from a screen star,” he must have greaned inwardly, long and loud. Mr. Haines is nicely expert, how- ever, in his Wallingford role and is amusingly supported by Jimmy Du- rante and Ernest ice. This is an excellent team for just this sort, of thing, and one he (just as explained As all good Wllllnllordlg know, everything is tried at the old butchery game and everything comes out all right in the end, with cupid, of course, standing on top of the world. The stage show, “Great Guns,” is presided over continually by Milton Berle, to whom the audience took a great fancy yesterday (one of his songs hits low zero). Charles Farrell end Madge Evans have the outstanding roles of the young member of the American embassy at Vienna and the daughter of an Austrian count. Their meet- ing is under circumstances that offer exceptional opportunities for the picturesque and the romantic. Their separation is unexpected 8s the United States enters the war. The climax comes in the killing of ‘the girl's brother by her lover. The woman, overcome With grief, sends him awzy, and he is then imprisoned by his own army for deserticn. The final reunion is most effective. Other leading mem- bers of the company are Hardie Al- bright and Paul Cavanagh. The battle in the clouds between the air- men is given with elaborate detail. The Fox also has a short Mack Sennett comedy, “The Great Pie Mystery,” which presents much satire and some originality in plot. The stage program is headed by Val and Ernie Stanton, whcse broad comedy gains nothing from its unrestrained character. Others are Claudia Cole- man, expert in character roles; Grauman, Hess and Valle, in slow motion dancing; the” Eno Troupe, Oriental athletes; Ramon and_ Vir- ginia, doll dancers, and Elmer Herl ing, an excellent tenor.
